진지함을 가진 쾌활함

“내가 가장 선한 것을 말하리라 내 입술을 열어 정직을 내리라”(잠 8:6).

나는 성령께서 온 하루를 통하여 나의 생각들을 통제하시도록 간구한다.

내가 하나님의 말씀 가운데서 보화들을 볼 수 있으며

가장 단순한 말로써 귀중한 진리를 나타내기 위하여 판단하는 일에 지혜와 뇌의 명철과 총명을 간구한다.

세상이 지금까지 알지 못했던 가장 위대한 교사 그리스도께서도 그리하셨다.

나는 권능과 큰 영광으로써 하늘 구름 가운데 오래지 않아 주님께서 나타나실 그 주제의 위대함에 관하여

더욱 더욱 마음에 감명을 받게 된다.

이 믿음은 나를 크게 감동시켜 언제나 모든 장소에서 정당한 엄숙성을 지니게 한다.

그러나 내가 내 자신과 남에게 근신하라고 명하나 우리는 슬픔과 우울함을 마음에 품어서는 안된다.

우리가 우울하지 아니하고 명랑하고 기뻐할 것이나 거기에는 미련함이 있어서는 아니되며

오히려 우리 믿음과 일치되는 근엄함이 있어야 한다.

말과 행동은 품성을 형성한다.

그러므로 우리의 말들은 깨끗하고 순결하며 단순하고 동시에 고결해야 한다.

언어의 재능은 귀중한 달란트이다.

주께서는 저속하고 값싸고 야비하고 무의미한 말, 악덕과 술마시고 떠들어대는 것을 듣기를 싫어하신다.

어떤 그리스도인도 다른 사람들로부터 이런 습관을 모방하거나 지조를 버리고 그대로 행해서는 안된다. …

이런 악하고 어리석은 말은 불협화음을 일으키고 어떤 사람에게도 기쁨을 주지 못한다.

그것은 영성을 저해시킨다.

하나님께서는 이런 일들을 금하신다.

“선한 사람은 그 쌓은 선에서 선한 것을 내고 악한 사람은 그 쌓은 악에서 악한 것을 내느니라

내가 너희에게 이르노니 사람이 무슨 무익한 말을 하든지 심판 날에 이에 대하여 심문을 받으리니

네 말로 의롭다 함을 받고 네 말로 정죄함을 받으리라” (마 12:35-37).

Cheerfulness With Sobriety

Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things. Proverbs 8:6.

I ask that the Holy Spirit shall control my thoughts through the day. I plead for wisdom in judgment, clearness of brain, and understanding, that I may see the treasures in the Word of God and bring out the precious truth in the simplest language. Thus did the greatest Teacher the world ever knew.

I feel more and more impressed with the greatness of the subject of the Lord’s soon appearing in the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. This faith moves me greatly to observe due solemnity at all times and in all places, but while I enjoin upon myself and others to be sober, they are not to cherish sadness and gloom....

While we are not to be gloomy, but cheerful and happy, there is to be no silliness, but a sobriety in harmony with our faith. Words and actions form character. Therefore our words should be clean, pure, simple, yet elevated.

The gift of speech is a valuable talent, and the Lord has no pleasure in hearing low, cheap, degrading nonsense which tastes strongly of vice and revelry. No Christian should condescend to imitate and catch such habits from another.... These evil, silly words are discordant notes and contribute to the happiness of no one. They are a detriment to spirituality. The Word of God forbids them.

“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matthew 12:35-37).
