양심적으로 행하면 자존감이 싹트게 됨

원칙의 사람들에게는 자물쇠와 열쇠 같은 것으로 제한을 가할 필요가 없다.

그들을 감시하거나 경계할 필요가 없다. 

그들은 공중 앞에서뿐 아니라

아무도 지켜보지 않고 홀로 있을 때에도, 항상 진실되고, 명예롭게 행동할 것이다.

그들은 어떤 이득이나 이기적 유익을 얻으려고 그들의 영혼을 얼룩지게 하지 않을 것이다.

그들은 천박한 행동을 멸시한다. 

그것을 그들 외에 아무도 모를 수 있지만, 그들 스스로는 알 것이며,

그것으로 인해 그들의 자존감은 파괴될 것이다.

양심적으로 행치 않고 작은 일들에 충성하지 않는 자들은

그 점에 관한 법과 제한들과 형벌이 있다하더라도 개혁하려 하지 않을 것이다.

Conscientiousness Engenders Self-respect

Men of principle need not the restriction of locks and keys; they do not need to be watched and guarded. 

They will deal truly and honorably at all times—alone, with no eye upon them, as well as in public.

They will not bring a stain upon their souls for any amount of gain or selfish advantage. 

They scorn a mean act. Although no one else might know it, they would know it themselves, and this would destroy their self-respect.

Those who are not conscientious and faithful in little things would not be reformed, were there laws and restrictions and penalties upon the point.
