용기가 필요한 시기

“요나단이 자기 병기 든 소년에게 이르되

우리가 이 할례 없는 자들의 부대에게로 건너가자 여호와께서 우리를 위하여 일하실까 하노라

여호와의 구원은 사람의 많고 적음에 달리지 아니하였느니라”(삼상 14;6).

... 요나단은 하나님의 성령의 감동을 받아 그의 병기 든 자에게 원수의 진을 은밀히 공격하자고 제의하였다.

역시 신앙과 기도의 사람인 병기 든 자도 그 계획을 격려하였고,

그들은 함께 저희 계획이 반대를 당하지 않도록 비밀리에 진영을 빠져나갔다.

그들은 저희 조상의 인도자 하나님께 열렬히 기도함으로써

저희가 어떻게 진격해 나가야 할지를 결정케 해주는 표징에 의견의 일치를 보았다.…

블레셋 인의 요새에 접근하여 저희 원수들의 앞에 모습을 나타냈을 때에, 원수들은 비웃으면서

“보라 히브리 사람이 그 숨었던 구멍에서 나온다”고 말하면서

“우리에게로 올라오라 너희에게 한 일을 보”여 주겠다며 그들에게 도전하였다.

이 말은 그들이 겁없이 접근한 두 이스라엘 사람을 처형하겠다는 뜻이었다.

이 도전은 요나단과 그의 동료가

여호와께서 그들의 계획을 성공시키시리라는 증거로서 받아들이기로 합의한 표징이었다.

이 용사들은 이제 블레셋 사람이 보이는 곳을 지나 은밀하고 어려운 길을 택하여,

그들이 올라오기 불가능할 것이라고 생각하고 수비를 소홀히 하고 있는

낭떠러지의 꼭대기로 향하여 나아갔다.

그리하여 그들은 원수들의 진영에 침투하여 파수병들을 죽였는데

이 파수병들은 너무나 놀라고 무서워서 아무 저항도 하지 못했다.

하늘의 천사들은 요나단과 그 수행원을 보호하고 그들 곁에서 싸웠으므로

블레셋 사람들은 그들 앞에 엎드러졌다.

이 두 사람은 그들이 인간 지휘관 이상의 감화와 명령에 의하여 움직이고 있다는 증거를

사람들에게 보여주었다.

겉으로 보기에는 그들의 모험은 위험스럽고 어느 전법에도 맞지 않는 것이었다.

그러나 요나단의 행위는 인간적인 성급함으로 행한 것이 아니었다.

그는 자신이나 자기의 병기 든 자의 능력에 의존하지 않았다.

A Time for Courage

And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the Lord will work for us: for there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few. 1 Samuel 14:6.

Moved by a divine impulse, Jonathan proposed to his armor-bearer that they should make a secret attack upon the enemy’s camp....

Together they withdrew from the camp, secretly, lest their purpose should be opposed. With earnest prayer to the Guide of their fathers, they agreed upon a sign by which they might determine how to proceed....

Approaching the Philistine fortress, they were revealed to the view of their enemies, who said, tauntingly, “Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves,” then challenged them, “Come up to us, and we will show you a thing,” meaning that they would punish the two Israelites for their daring.

This challenge was the token that Jonathan and his companion had agreed to accept as evidence that the Lord would prosper their undertaking.

Passing now from the sight of the Philistines, and choosing a secret and difficult path, the warriors made their way to the summit of a cliff that had been deemed inaccessible, and was not very strongly guarded. Thus they penetrated the enemy’s camp and slew the sentinels, who, overcome with surprise and fear, offered no resistance.

Angels of heaven shielded Jonathan and his attendant, angels fought by their side, and the Philistines fell before them.

These two men gave evidence that they were moving under the influence and command of a more than human general. To outward appearance, their venture was rash, and contrary to all military rules.

But the action of Jonathan was not done in human rashness. He depended not on what he and his armor-bearer themselves could do; he was the instrument that God used in behalf of His people Israel.
