하나님께서 그분의 것을 보호하심

하나님께서는 세밀하고 엄격한 시험으로써 당신의 종들을 훈련하신다.

그분께서는 당신의 사업을 발전시키는 데 사용할 수 있는 역량을 가진 어떤 사람들을 보시고

이들을 시련에 처하게 하신다.

그리하여 그분께서는 당신의 섭리 가운데서 그들의 품성을 시험하며,

그들 자신들은 알지 못했던 결점과 약점들을 드러내는 위치로 그들을 이끄신다. 

그분께서는 이 결점들을 시정하고 당신을 위한 봉사에 그들 자신을 적합한 자가 되게 할 수 있는 기회를

그들에게 주신다.

그분은 그들에게 그들 자신의 연약함을 보이시고 당신을 의지하도록 가르치신다.

왜냐하면 그분만이 그들의 도움과 보호자가 되시기 때문이다.

이리하여 그분의 목적은 달성된다.

그들의 능력이 그들에게 주어진 그 큰 목적을 성취하기 위하여 그들은 교육과 연단과 훈련을 받으며 준비된다. … 
애굽에 체류하는 동안 아브라함은 인간적인 약점과 불완전함을 벗어나지 못하였음을 증거하였다.

사라가 그의 아내라는 사실을 숨김으로써 그는 하나님의 보호하심에 대한 불신을 드러내고,

그의 생애 속에서 그처럼 자주 존귀하게 예증되었던 고상한 신앙과 용기의 결핍을 나타내었다.…
그는 사라가 자기 어머니의 딸은 아닐지라도 자기 아버지의 딸이었으므로

그를 누이라고 하는 것은 거짓말하는 죄가 아니라고 생각하였다.

그러나 이같이 그들 사이의 진정한 관계를 은폐하는 것은 기만이었다. 

엄격한 정직에서 벗어나는 것은 하나님의 승인을 받을 수 없다.

아브라함의 믿음의 부족 때문에 사라는 큰 위험에 처하였다.

사라가 아름답다는 말을 듣고 애굽 왕은 그를 자신의 아내로 삼으려고 궁궐로 데려오게 하였다.

그러나 주께서 왕가에 천벌을 내리심으로 당신의 크신 자비로 사라를 보호하셨다. … 

바로에게 주어진 경고는

아브라함이 그 후 이방 백성들과 교제할 때에 그에게 보호가 되었다는 것이 밝혀졌다. …
아브라함이 섬기던 하나님은 당신의 종을 보호하시며

그에게 입힌 어떤 해라도 보복을 당한다는 사실이 알려졌기 때문이었다.

하늘의 왕의 자녀 가운데 한 사람에게라도 나쁜 짓을 하는 것은 위험한 일이다.

God Protects His Own

It is by close, testing trials that God disciplines His servants. He sees that some have powers which may be used in the advancement of His work, and He puts these persons upon trial; in His providence He brings them into positions that test their character and reveal defects and weaknesses that have been hidden from their own knowledge. 

He gives them opportunity to correct these defects and to fit themselves for His service. He shows them their own weakness, and teaches them to lean upon Him; for He is their only help and safeguard. Thus His object is attained. They are educated, trained, and disciplined, prepared to fulfill the grand purpose for which their powers were given them.... 

During his stay in Egypt, Abraham gave evidence that he was not free from human weakness and imperfection. In concealing the fact that Sarah was his wife, he betrayed a distrust of the divine care, a lack of that lofty faith and courage so often and nobly exemplified in his life....
He reasoned that he was not guilty of falsehood in representing Sarah as his sister, for she was the daughter of his father, though not of his mother. But this concealment of the real relation between them was deception. 

No deviation from strict integrity can meet God’s approval. Through Abraham’s lack of faith, Sarah was placed in great peril. The king of Egypt, being informed of her beauty, caused her to be taken to his palace, intending to make her his wife. But the Lord, in His great mercy, protected Sarah by sending judgments upon the royal household.... 

 The warning that had been given to Pharaoh proved a protection to Abraham in his after-intercourse with heathen peoples;
... it was seen that the God whom Abraham worshiped would protect His servant, and that any injury done him would be avenged. It is a dangerous thing to wrong one of the children of the King of heaven.
