종교가 하는 일

참된 신앙은 마음을 고상하게 해주며,

취향을 세련되게 해주고,

판단력을 성화시켜 주며,

그것을 소유한 사람을 하늘의 순결과 성결에 참여하는 사람으로 만들어 준다.

 

그것은 천사들이 우리에게 가까이 다가오도록 만들며,

우리를 더욱더 세상의 정신과 영향에서 분리시켜준다.

그것은 생애의 모든 행동과 관계 속에 스며들고,

우리에게 “근신하는 마음”을 주며,

그 결과는 행복과 평강이다.

 

What Religion Does

True religion ennobles the mind,

refines the taste,

sanctifies the judgment,

and makes its possessor a partaker of the purity and the holiness of Heaven.

It brings angels near

and separates us more and more from the spirit and influence of the world.

It enters into all the acts and relations of life

and gives us the “spirit of a sound mind,”

and the result is happiness and peace.
