PROMOTING UNITY

The LORD hates . . . one who sows discord among brethren. -Proverbs 6:16,19

The language of Proverbs 6:16-19 is strong. In the citing of seven things the Lord hates, sowing “discord among brethren” makes the list. The reason for naming this sin is that it spoils the unity that Christ desires for His followers (John 17:21-22). Those who sow discord may not initially set out to create divisions. They may be preoccupied instead with their personal needs or the interests of a group they belong to (James 4:1-10). Consider how Lot’s herdsmen argued with those of Abraham (Gen. 13:1-18); Christ’s disciples argued about personal preeminence (Luke 9:46); and divisive groups in the church at Corinth elevated party factions above the unity of the Spirit (1 Cor. 3:1-7). So what is the best way to promote unity? It begins with the transformation of the heart. When we adopt the mind of Christ, we develop an attitude of humility and we focus on service toward others (Phil. 2:5-11). only in Him can we access the power to “look out not only for [our] own interests, but also for the interests of others” (v.4). Soon the needs and hopes of others become more important to us than our own. With growing bonds of love among us, we fi-nd discord re-placed with joy and unity (see Ps. 133:1). -Dennis Fisher

여호와께서 미워하시는 것…형제 사이를 이간하는 자이니라-잠언 6:16,19

잠언 16장 16절에서 19절의 언어는 강력합니다. 여호와께서 싫어하시는 것 일곱 가지를 언급하고 있는데 “형제 사이를 이간”하는 것이 포함되어 있습니다. 이것이 들어있는 이유는 이 죄가 그리스도께서 그의 제자들에게 바라시는 연합을 깨뜨리기 때문입니다(요 17:21-22). 이렇게 이간하는 사람들도 처음부터 분열을 의도하지는 않았을 것입니다. 그들이 자신의 필요나, 소속되어 있는 그룹의 이익에 몰두했기 때문일 수도 있습니다(약 4:1-10). 롯의 목자들과 아브라함의 목자들이 어떻게 다투었는지 생각해보십시오(창 13:1-18). 그리스도의 제자들도 누가 더 뛰어난가에 대해 서로 다투었고(눅 9:46), 고린도교회에서도 불화를 일으키는 그룹들로 인해 성령님으로 인한 하나 됨보다 파가 갈라지는 일이 생겼습니다(고전 3:1-7). 그러면 연합을 촉진하는 가장 좋은 방법은 무엇일까요? 그것은 마음의 변화로부터 시작됩니다. 우리가 그리스도의 마음을 본받으면 우리는 겸손한 태도를 갖게 되고 다른 사람을 섬기는 일에 초점을 맞추게 됩니다(빌 2:5-11). 오직 주님 안에서만 “자기 일을 돌볼뿐더러 또한 각각 다른 사람들의 일을 돌보는”(4절) 능력을 갖게 됩니다. 그리고 머지않아 다른 사람들의 필요와 바람들이 우리 자신의 것보다 더 중요하게 됩니다. 우리 가운데 사랑의 끈이 튼튼해지면 분열이 기쁨과 연합으로 바뀌는 것을 보게 될 것입니다(시 133:1 참조).

강한 군대가 하나님의 교회를 움직이듯 형제여, 성도들이 이미 밟았던 그곳을 우리도 밟고 있다네 우리는 분열된 지체가 아니요, 모두 한 몸이니 한 소망, 한 교훈, 한 사랑이라네

혼자 하는 것보다 함께 할 때 더 많은 것을 이룰 수 있다.
