GENTLE WITNESS

You shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. -Acts 1:8

Years ago, I was hospitalized following a life-threatening, 38-foot fall from a bridge. While I was there, the wife of the man in the next bed stopped to speak to me. “My husband just told me what happened to you,” she said. “We believe God spared your life because He wants to use you. We’ve been praying for you.” I was stunned. I had grown up going to church, but I had never imagined that God would want to be involved in my life. Her words pointed me to a Savior I had heard of but did not know-and marked the beginning of my coming to Christ. I cherish the memory of those words from a gentle witness who cared enough to say something to a stranger about the God whose love is real. Her words conveyed care and concern, and offered purpose and promise. Jesus challenged His disciples-and us-to tell others about the love of God: “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8). Through the Holy Spirit our words and witness can have the power to make an eternal difference in the lives of others. -Bill Crowder

친절한 증인

너희가…예루살렘과 온 유대와 사마리아와 땅 끝까지 이르러 내 증인이 되리라-사도행전 1:8

오래 전에 나는 약 11.5 미터 높이의 다리에서 떨어져 목숨이 위태로운 상태로 병원에 입원한 적이 있었습니다. 내가 병원에 있을 때 옆 침대 환자의 아내가 내게 오더니, “당신에게 무슨 일이 있었는지 남편이 말해주었어요. 우리는 하나님께서 당신을 쓰시기 원하셔서 생명을 구해주셨다고 믿어요. 당신을 위해 계속 기도하고 있어요.”라고 말했습니다. 나는 놀랐습니다. 교회를 다니며 자라기는 했지만, 하나님이 내 삶에 관여하기를 원하신다는 생각은 한 번도 해본 적이 없었기 때문입니다. 그 여인의 말이 내 마음을 움직여, 듣기는 했지만 알지 못했던 구주께로 나를 향하게 했고 내가 그리스도에게 나아가는 계기가 되었습니다. 나는 관심을 가지고 낯선 이에게 참된 사랑의 하나님에 대해 전해주었던 그 친절한 증인의 말을 소중히 기억합니다. 그 여인의 말에는 사랑과 관심이 담겨 있었고, 목적과 약속을 전해주었습니다. 예수님도 다음과 같이 말씀하시며 하나님의 사랑을 다른 사람들에게 말하라고 제자들에게, 그리고 우리들에게 도전을 주셨습니다. “오직 성령이 너희에게 임하시면 너희가 권능을 받고 예루살렘과 온 유대와 사마리아와 땅 끝까지 이르러 내 증인이 되리라”(행 1:8). 성령님이 도우시면 우리의 말과 증거는 다른 사람들의 삶에 영원한 변화를 가져오는 능력이 될 수 있습니다.

주 예수 넓은 사랑 그 크신 은혜를 나 힘써 전파함은 참 기쁜 일일세 주 예수 복된 말씀 생명과 진리요 내 맘의 갈급함을 다 채워주시네

사랑의 말 한 마디는 우리가 상상할 수 있는 것보다 더 많은 일을 이룰 수 있다.
