GREAT EXPECTATIONS

According to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified. -Phil. 1:20

I once asked a counselor what the major issues were that brought people to him. Without hesitation he said, “The root of many problems is broken expectations; if not dealt with, they mature into anger and bitterness.” In our best moments, it’s easy to expect that we will fi-nd ourselves in a good place surrounded by good people who like and affirm us. But life has a way of breaking those expectations. What then? Stuck in jail and beset by fellow believers in Rome who didn’t like him (Phil. 1:15-16), Paul remained surprisingly upbeat. As he saw it, God had given him a new mission field. While under house arrest, he witnessed to the guards about Christ, which sent the gospel into Caesar’s house. And even though those opposing him were preaching the gospel from wrong motives, Christ was being preached, so Paul rejoiced (v.18). Paul never expected to be in a great place or to be well liked. His only expectation was that “Christ will be magnified” through him (v.20). He wasn’t disappointed. If our expectation is to make Christ visible to those around us regardless of where we are or who we are with, we will find those expectations met and even exceeded. Lord, forgive me for making my life all about what I expect and not about glorifying You regardless of my circumstances. May Your love, mercy,and justice be magnified through me today.

Make it your only expectation to magnify Christ wherever you are and whoever you are with.

나의 간절한 기대와 소망을 따라 아무 일에든지 부끄러워하지 아니하고 지금도 전과 같이 온전히 담대하여…내 몸에서 그리스도가 존귀하게 되게 하려 하나니-빌립보서 1:20

언젠가 한 상담가에게 사람들이 상담을 받으러 오는 중요한 문제가 무엇인지 물어보았습니다. 그는 주저하지 않고 말했습니다. “많은 문제들의 근본 원인은 깨어져버린 기대입니다. 적절하게 다루지 않으면 그 문제들은 분노와 괴로움으로 자라게 됩니다.” 좋은 시절에는 우리를 좋아하고 지지해주는 좋은 사람들로 둘러싸여 있는 상황에 놓여 있기를 기대하는 것은 쉽습니다. 그러나 인생에서는 그런 기대가 깨어져버릴 때가 많습니다. 그러면 그때는 어떻게 합니까? 바울은 감옥에 갇혀 있었고 그를 좋아하지 않았던 로마의 동료 신자들에게 둘러싸여 있었지만(빌 1:15-16) 놀랍게도 그는 여전히 낙관적이었습니다. 바울은 그 상황을 보면서 하나님이 자기에게 새로운 선교지를 주셨다고 해석하였습니다. 가택연금 기간 중 그는 간수들에게 그리스도를 증거하여 로마황제의 궁에까지 복음을 전할 수 있었습니다. 그를 반대하는 자들이 잘못된 동기로 복음을 전했을 때에도 그리스도가 전해지고 있었음으로 바울은 기뻐하였습니다(18절). 바울은 중요한 자리에 있거나 호의받기를 전혀 기대하지 않았습니다. 그의 유일한 기대는 그를 통하여 “그리스도가 존귀하게 되는 것”이었기에(20절), 그는 실망하지 않았습니다. 우리가 어디에 있든지 누구와 있든지 우리가 바라는 것이 주위에 있는 사람들에게 그리스도를 보여주는 것이라면, 그 기대는 부응했음을 알게 될 것이며 더 나아가 그 기대를 능가할 수도 있습니다. 그러면 그리스도는 찬양을 받으실 것입니다.

주님, 어떤 상황에서든 주님을 영화롭게 하는 것이 아니라 내가 기대하는 것으로만 내 인생을 채운 것을 용서하여 주옵소서. 주님의 사랑과 자비와 정의가 오늘 나를 통해 찬양을 받게 해주시옵소서.

어디에 있든지 누구와 있든지 그리스도를 존귀케 하는 것이 당신의 유일한 기대가 되게 하라.
