THE DISCIPLINE OF WAITING

I waited patiently for the LORD and He inclined to me, and heard my cry. -Psalm 40:1

Waiting is hard. We wait in grocery lines, in traffic, in the doctor’s office. We twiddle our thumbs, stifle our yawns, and fret inwardly in frustration. on another level, we wait for a letter that doesn’t come, for a prodigal child to return, or for a spouse to change. We wait for a child we can hold in our arms. We wait for our heart’s desire. In Psalm 40, David says, “I waited patiently for the Lord.” The original language here suggests that David “waited and waited and waited” for God to answer his prayer. Yet as he looks back at this time of delay, he praises God. As a result, David says, God “put a new song . . . a hymn of praise” in his heart (40:3 NIV). “What a chapter can be written of God’s delays!” said F. B. Meyer. “It is the mystery of educating human spirits to the finest temper of which they are capable.” Through the discipline of waiting, we can develop the quieter virtues-submission, humility, patience, joyful endurance, persistence in well-doing-virtues that take the longest to learn. What do we do when God seems to withhold our heart’s desire? He is able to help us to love and trust Him enough to accept the delay with joy and to see it as an opportunity to develop these virtues-and to praise Him. -David Roper

내가 여호와를 기다리고 기다렸더니 귀를 기울이사 나의 부르짖음을 들으셨도다-시편 40:1

기다리는 것은 힘든 일입니다. 우리는 식품점에서 줄을 서고, 교통이 막혀 기다리며, 병원에서 기다립니다. 우리는 깍지 끼고 엄지손가락을 빙빙 돌리면서 무료해하거나, 하품을 참기도 하고, 좌절감에 싸여 속으로 안달하기도 합니다. 그러나 다른 차원의 기다림도 있습니다. 우리는 오지 않는 편지를 기다리고, 방탕한 자식이 돌아오기를 기다리며, 배우자가 변하기를 기다립니다. 또 품에 안을 수 있는 자식을 기다립니다. 우리는 우리의 마음이 갈구하는 것을 기다리는 것입니다. 다윗은 시편 40편에서 “내가 여호와를 기다리고 기다렸더니”라고 말합니다. 여기에서 원어의 표현은 다윗이 그의 기도에 하나님이 응답하시기를 “기다리고 기다리고 또 기다렸다”는 것을 암시합니다. 그러나 이번에 응답이 지연되는 것을 보고서도 다윗은 하나님을 찬양합니다. 그 결과 다윗은 하나님이 그의 마음에 “새 노래 곧…찬송을 내 입에 두셨”(40:3)다고 말합니다. 이에 대해 에프 비 마이어는 이렇게 말합니다. “지연되는 하나님의 응답에 관한 이 얼마나 놀라운 시편인가! 이 시편은 인간의 영혼에 가능한 가장 좋은 성품을 가르쳐주는 신비한 시편이다.”라고 말했습니다. 기다림에 대한 훈련을 통해서 우리는 몸에 지니는데 가장 오래 걸리는 복종, 겸손, 인내, 즐거이 견딤, 지속적인 선행 등의 조용한 미덕들을 개발할 수 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리가 간절히 소원하는 것을 주시지 않는 것처럼 보일 때 우리는 어떻게 합니까? 하나님은 우리가 응답이 지연되는 것을 기쁜 마음으로 받아들이고 또 그것을 위에서 말한 덕목들을 개발하는 기회로 볼 수 있을 정도로 충분히 하나님을 사랑하고 의지하도록 도와주실 수 있습니다. 그리고 하나님을 찬양하게 하실 수 있습니다.

주님의 뜻을 이루소서 고요한 중에 기다리니 진흙과 같은 날 빚으사 주님의 형상 만드소서

하나님을 기다리는 것은 결코 시간 낭비가 아니다.
