AN ORDINARY DAY

Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. -Matthew 24:42

While exploring a museum exhibit titled “A Day in Pompeii,” I was struck by the repeated theme that August 24, AD 79 began as an ordinary day.   People were going about their daily business in homes, markets, and at the port of this prosperous Roman town of 20,000 people. At 8 a.m., a series of small emissions were seen coming from nearby Mount Vesuvius, followed by a violent eruption in the afternoon. In less than 24 hours, Pompeii and many of its people lay buried under a thick layer of volcanic ash. Unexpected. Jesus told His followers that He would return on a day when people were going about their business, sharing meals, and having weddings, with no idea of what was about to happen. “As the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be” (Matt. 24:37). The Lord’s purpose was to urge the disciples to be watchful and prepared: “Therefore you also be ready,  for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (v.44). What surprising joy it would be to welcome our Savior on this ordinary day! -David McCasland

평범한 날

그러므로 깨어 있으라 어느 날에 너희 주가 임할는지 너희가 알지 못함이니라-마태복음 24:42

“폼페이의 하루”라는 제목의 박물관 전시회를 보고 있는 동안 서기 79년 8월 4일이 다른 평범한 날과 다름없이 시작되었다는 주제를 여러 차례 강조하는 것에 놀랐습니다.   2만 여명의 인구를 가진 이 번성하던 로마의 한 도시에서 사람들은 가정과 시장과 항구에서 그들의 일상생활을 하고 있었습니다. 하지만 오전 8시에 일련의 분화물이 근처의 베수비오 산에서 나오는 것이 보이더니 오후에 격렬한 화산 분화가 뒤따랐습니다. 결국 24시간도 안되어 폼페이와 많은 시민들이 두꺼운 화산재 층 밑에 깔려버렸습니다. 아무도 예상치 못한 일이었습니다. 예수님은 그를 따르는 자들에게 말하시길 사람들이 곧 일어날 일에 대해 아무것도 모른 체 함께 식사하고 결혼식을 하는 등, 일상적으로 생활하는 그런 날에 다시 돌아오시겠다고 하셨습니다. “노아의 때와 같이 인자의 임함도 그러하리라”(마 24:37). 주님이 이렇게 말씀하신 목적은 제자들에게 경계하고 준비할 것을 가르쳐주기 위함이었습니다. “이러므로 너희도 준비하고 있으라 생각하지 않은 때에 인자가 오리라”(44절). 이 평범한 날에 우리 구세주를 맞이하는 일은 얼마나 놀라운 환희가 되겠습니까!

오늘 주님이 오신다면 여기에 있는 우리의 믿음이 깊고 진실하다고 하실까 오늘 주님이 오신다면 두려움이 아니라 기쁨으로 주님을 만날 수 있을까 때가 가까이 오고 있으니 깨어 있으라. 만일 그날이 오늘이라면

어쩌면 오늘일 수도 있다!
