THE WONDER OF THE CROSS

[Look] unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross. -Hebrews 12:2

While visiting Australia, I had the opportunity on a particularly clear night to see the Southern Cross. Located in the Southern Hemisphere, this constellation is one of the most distinctive. Mariners and navigators began relying on it as early as the 15th century for direction and navigation through the seas. Although relatively small, it is visible throughout most of the year. The Southern Cross was so vivid on that dark night that even I could pick it out of the bundle of stars. It was truly a magnificent sight! The Scriptures tell us of an even more magnificent cross─the cross of Christ. When we look at the stars, we see the handiwork of the Creator; but when we look at the cross, we see the Creator dying for His creation. Hebrews 12:2 calls us to “[look] unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” The wonder of Calvary’s cross is that while we were still in our sins, our Savior died for us (Rom. 5:8). Those who place their trust in Christ are now reconciled to God, and He navigates them through life (2 Cor. 1:8-10). Christ’s sacrifice on the cross is the greatest of all wonders! -Bill Crowder

믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 이인 예수를 바라보자 그는 그 앞에 있는 기쁨을 위하여 십자가를 참으사-히브리서 12:2

오스트레일리아를 방문하던 중, 특히 맑은 날 밤에 남십자성을 볼 기회가 있었습니다. 남반구에 위치한 이 별자리는 가장 뚜렷이 구별되는 별자리 중의 하나입니다. 선원들과 항해사들은 바다에서 항해할 때 방향을 잡기 위해 일찍이 15세기부터 이 별자리에 의지하기 시작했습니다. 남십자성은 상대적으로 작지만 거의 일 년 내내 볼 수 있습니다. 남십자성은 그 어둔 밤에 너무도 명확해서 심지어는 나조차도 별 무리 가운데에서 그것을 찾아낼 수 있었습니다. 그것은 정말 장엄한 광경이었습니다! 성경은 우리에게 더 굉장한 십자가, 바로 그리스도의 십자가에 대해 이야기합니다. 우리가 별들을 바라보면, 우리는 창조주께서 손수 지으신 것을 보게 됩니다. 하지만 십자가를 바라보면, 우리는 자신의 피조물을 위해 죽어가는 창조주를 보게 됩니다. 히브리서 12장 2절은 우리에게 “믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 이인 예수를 바라보자 그는 그 앞에 있는 기쁨을 위하여 십자가를 참으사 부끄러움을 개의치 아니하시더니 하나님 보좌 우편에 앉으셨느니라”라고 말합니다. 갈보리 언덕의 십자가가 놀라운 것은 우리가 아직 죄인이었을 때 우리의 구주께서 우리를 위하여 죽으셨다는 것입니다(롬 5:8). 그리스도께 믿음을 둔 사람들은 하나님과 화해하게 되었고, 하나님께서 그들의 평생 동안 그들을 안내하십니다(고후 1:8-10). 그리스도가 십자가 위에서 치른 희생은 모든 경이로움 중 가장 위대한 것입니다!

그리스도의 십자가는 영생에 이르는 하나밖에 없는 안전한 건널목을 제공해준다.
