현시대의 신앙부흥

신앙 부흥은 마음을 깊이 살피는 일과 겸비한 정신을 주었다.

그 부흥들은 죄인에 대한 엄숙하고 열렬한 호소로

또한 그리스도의 피로 산 영혼들에 대한 애절한 동정으로 특징지어졌다. 

남녀들은 기도하고 영혼의 구원을 위하여 하나님과 씨름하였다.

그와 같은 신앙 부흥의 결과로 극기와 희생을 두려워하지 않고

도리어 그리스도를 위하여 비난과 시련 받는 것을 합당히 여기고 즐거워하는 사람들이 나타났다. 

사람들은 예수님의 이름을 부르는 사람들의 생애에 나타난 변화를 바라보았다.

지역 사회는 그들의 감화로 유익을 얻었다.

그들은 그리스도와 함께 모이고 성령으로 씨를 뿌리고 영생을 거두었다.

... 그러나 오늘날 인기 있는 교회에 하나님께 헌신하는 정신이 있는가? 
회심하였노라고 하는 사람들도 여전히 교만과 세상을 사랑하는 마음을 버리지 않고 있다.

그들은 회개하기 전과 다름없이

자기를 이기고 제 십자가를 지고 온유하고 겸손하신 예수님을 따르려고 하지 않는다. 

종교인으로 자처하면서도 그 원칙에 대하여 무지한 자들 때문에

종교는 무신론자들과 회의론자들의 놀림감이 되어 버렸다. 

경건의 능력은 많은 교회에서 거의 떠나갔다.

야유회, 연극, 자선시 (慈善市), 굉장한 건축, 개인들의 사치 등이 하나님께 대한 생각을 제거해 버렸다.

토지와 재산과 세속적 직업이 사람들의 마음을 빼앗아서 영원한 이익에 속한 사물을 거의 주목해 볼 수 없다.

무릇 사람이 성경의 증거를 등한히 하고,

극기하고 세속을 버리도록 요구하는 분명하고 심령을 살피게 하는 진리에서 돌아설 때

하나님의 축복을 받지 못하는 것이 분명하다. 

하나님께서는 진리를 통하여 당신 자신에 관한 계시를 주셨다.

그러므로 그 말씀을 받아들이는 사람은 모두 사탄의 속임수에서 보호를 받는다....

하나님의 율법의 성격과 영속성과 그 의무에 대한 그릇된 개념이

회개와 성화의 관계에 대한 오류를 가져왔고 그 결과로 교회내의 경건의 표준이 낮아졌다. 
우리 시대의 신앙 부흥 가운데 하나님의 영과 권능이 결핍된 원인이 여기에 있다.

Modern Revivals

Revivals brought deep heart-searching and humility. They were characterized by solemn, earnest appeals to the sinner, by yearning compassion for the purchase of the blood of Christ. 

Men and women prayed and wrestled with God for the salvation of souls. The fruits of such revivals were seen in souls who shrank not at self-denial and sacrifice, but rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer reproach and trial for the sake of Christ. 

Men beheld a transformation in the lives of those who had professed the name of Jesus. The community was benefited by their influence. They gathered with Christ, and sowed to the Spirit, to reap life everlasting.
With every truly converted soul the relation to God and to eternal things will be the great topic of life. 

But where, in the popular churches of today, is the spirit of consecration to God? The converts do not renounce their pride and love of the world. 
They are no more willing to deny self, to take up the cross, and follow the meek and lowly Jesus, than before their conversion. 
Religion has become the sport of infidels and skeptics because so many who bear its name are ignorant of its principles. 

The power of godliness has well-nigh departed from many of the churches. Picnics, church theatricals, church fairs, fine houses, personal display, have banished thoughts of God. 
Lands and goods and worldly occupations engross the mind, and things of eternal interest receive hardly a passing notice.

Wherever men neglect the testimony of the Bible, turning away from those plain, soul-testing truths which require self-denial and renunciation of the world, there we may be sure that God’s blessing is not bestowed.

In the truths of His word, God has given to men a revelation of Himself; and to all who accept them they are a shield against the deceptions of Satan...

A wrong conception of the character, the perpetuity, and the obligation of the divine law has led to errors in relation to conversion and sanctification, and has resulted in lowering the standard of piety in the church. 
Here is to be found the secret of the lack of the Spirit and power of God in the revivals of our time.
