보석인가 혹은 돌인가?

그리스도인들은 그리스도의 보석들이다.

저들은 그리스도를 위하여 광명하게 빛을 발하여야 하며 그리스도의 아름다움의 빛을 비취어야 한다.

저들의 광채는 저들이 잘 닦임을 받는 여하에 달려 있다.

저들은 닦임을 받도록 선택할 수도 있고 그렇지 않으면 저들의 상태 그대로 남아 있을 수도 있다.

그러나 주의 성전에 있어서 한 자리를 차지할만한 과정에 복종하여야만 할 것이다.

주님께서 제공하는 바 닦이는 것이 없이는 저들은 보통 돌 이상 더 빛을 발할 수 없다.

그리스도께서 각 사람에게 다음과 같이 말씀하신다.

“너는 나의 것이다. 내가 너를 값으로 샀다.

지금의 너는 거친 돌에 불과하나 만일 네가 네 자신을 내 손에 놓으면

나는 너를 닦아 네가 비추는 그 광채로 나의 이름을 영화롭게 할 것이다.

내가 너를 나의 독특한 보화로 삼으리라

나의 대관식 날에 있어서 너는 나의 기쁨의 면류관의 보석이 되리라”

거룩하신 일꾼이신 예수님께서는 무가치한 사물에 시간을 소비하시지 않으셨다.

그는 다만 귀중한 보석만을 그의 궁전의 모양을 따라 닦으며 모든 거친 모를 갈아 없이하실 것이다.

이 과정은 가혹하고 쓰라리다. 이것은 인간의 교만을 상하게 한다.

그리스도께서는 사람이 자아 만족 가운데서 완전하다고 생각하는 그러한 경험을 깊이 갈아 없이 하신다.

거친 표면을 갈아내고 그것을 돌을 가는 기구 위에 놓고 꽉 눌러서 모든 거친 면을 다 갈려 나가게 하신다.

그 다음에 주께서 그 돌을 빛 가운데 들고 비추어 보실 때

그 속에서 주님 자신의 모습이 반사되어 나오는 것을 보신다.

그리고 "그것을 나의 보석 상자에 넣을 가치가 있다"고 선포하신다.

"나 만군의 여호와가 말하노라

그 날에 내가 너를 취하고 너로 인을 삼으리니 이는 내가 너를 택하였음이니라

만군의 여호와의 말이니라"(학 2:23).

그 경험이 아무리 혹독할지라도 그것은 복된 경험이다.

이는 그것이 그 돌에다 새로운 가치를 부여하고 생명의 빛이 비취게 하기 때문이다.

하나님은 그분의 충실한 일꾼들 중 한사람도 큰 불행과 싸우도록

홀로 버림을 당하여 정복을 당하게 허락하지 않으실 것이다.

그는 그리스도와 함께 그들의 생명이 감추인 모든 사람을 귀중한 보석처럼 보존하신다.

A Jewel or a Pebble?

Christians are Christ’s jewels. They are to shine brightly for Him, shedding forth the light of His loveliness. Their luster depends on the polishing they receive.

They may choose to be polished or to remain unpolished. But everyone who is pronounced worthy of a place in the Lord’s temple must submit to the polishing process. Without the polishing that the Lord gives they can reflect no more light than a common pebble.

Christ says to man, “You are mine. I have bought you. You are now only a rough stone, but if you will place yourself in my hands, I will polish you, and the luster with which you shall shine will bring honor to My name. No man shall pluck you out of My hand. I will make you My peculiar treasure. on My coronation day, you will be a jewel in My crown of rejoicing.” 

The divine Worker spends little time on worthless material. only the precious jewels does He polish after the similitude of a palace, cutting away all the rough edges.

This process is severe and trying; it hurts human pride. Christ cuts deep into the experience that man in his self-sufficiency has regarded as complete, and takes away self-uplifting from the character. He cuts away the surplus surface, and putting the stone to the polishing wheel, presses it close, that all roughness may be worn away.

Then, holding the jewel up to the light, the Master sees in it a reflection of Himself, and He pronounces it worthy of a place in His casket.

“In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, will I take thee,... and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the Lord of hosts.”

Blessed be the experience, however severe, that gives new value to the stone, and causes it to shine with living brightness.

God will not suffer one of His truehearted workers to be left alone to struggle against great odds and be overcome. He preserves as a precious jewel every one whose life is hid with Christ in God.
