예상되는 불행을 곰곰이 생각하는 습관

우리는 매일, 매 시간 예수님을 의지할 필요가 있다.

그분의 은혜를 통하여 우리는 현실의 모든 짐을 지고 그 의무를 수행할 수 있다.

그러나 많은 사람들은 장래의 어려움을 미리 짐작하고 압도당한다.

그들은 내일의 짐을 오늘 지고자 끊임없이 애쓰고 있다.

그와 같이 그들의 어려움 중 상당 부분은 상상적인 것이다.

이러한 사람들을 위해서 예수님께서는 아무런 준비도 갖추어 놓지 않으셨다.

그분은 오직 오늘만을 위한 은혜를 약속하신다.

그분은 내일의 염려나 어려움을 지지 말도록 우리에게 명령하신다.

“한 날 괴로움은 그날에 족하” 기 때문이다 (마 6:34). 

예상되는 불행을 곰곰이 생각하는 습관은 지혜롭지 않고 그리스도인적이 아니다.

그렇게 함으로써 우리는 축복을 누리지 못하고 현재의 기회를 이용하지 못한다.

주님께서는 우리에게 오늘의 의무를 이행하고 그 시련들을 견디도록 요구하신다.

우리는 오늘 말과 행동으로 잘못하지 않도록 조심해야 한다.

우리는 하나님을 찬양하고 높이지 않으면 안된다.

오늘 산 믿음을 실천함으로써 우리는 원수를 정복해야 한다.

우리는 오늘 하나님을 찾고 그분의 임재 없이 만족한 채 안식하지 않으리라고 작정해야 한다.

우리는 이 날이 우리에게 허용될 수 있는 마지막 날인 것처럼 경계하고 일하고 기도해야 한다.

그렇게 되면 우리의 생애는 참으로 얼마나 열렬해질 것인가!

우리는 모든 말과 행동으로 예수님을 참으로 밀접하게 따라가게 될 것인가!

The Habit of Brooding Over Anticipated Evils

We need to trust in Jesus daily, hourly. He has promised that as our day is, our strength shall be. By His grace we may bear all the burdens of the present and perform its duties.

But many are weighed down by the anticipation of future troubles. They are constantly seeking to bring tomorrow’s burdens into today. Thus a large share of all their trials are imaginary.

For these, Jesus has made no provision. He promises grace only for the day.

He bids us not to burden ourselves with the cares and troubles of tomorrow; for “sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”

The habit of brooding over anticipated evils is unwise and unchristian. In thus doing we fail to enjoy the blessings and to improve the opportunities of the present.

The Lord requires us to perform the duties of today and to endure its trials. We are today to watch that we offend not in word or deed. We must today praise and honor God.

By the exercise of living faith today we are to conquer the enemy. We must today seek God and be determined that we will not rest satisfied without His presence.

We should watch and work and pray as though this were the last day that would be granted us.

How intensely earnest, then, would be our life. How closely would we follow Jesus in all our words and deeds.
