각 사람은 존귀하게 평가되어야 함

 

 

“너는 네 형제를 마음으로 미워 말며 …

원수를 갚지 말며 동포를 원망하지 말며

이웃 사랑하기를 네 몸과 같이 하라”

 

구주의 말씀은 청중들에게,

다른 사람을 범죄자로 정죄하는 동안에는

그들 자신도 꼭 같은 죄인이 된다는 사실을 보여 주었다.

왜냐하면 그들 역시 악의와 증오를 품고 있기 때문이었다.…

 

그들은 로마인 압제자들에 대하여 더할 수 없는 적대감을 품고 있었으며,

다른 백성들은 물론, 심지어 동포들이라 할지라도

모든 면에서 자신들의 사상과 맞지 않으면 마음대로 미워하고 멸시할 수 있다고 생각했다.

이 모든 일을 통하여, 그들은 “살인하지 말라”는 계명을 범하고 있었다.

 

증오와 복수의 정신은 원래 사단에게서 나왔으며,

그는 이것 때문에 하나님의 아들을 죽이게 되었다.

적의(敵意)나 몰인정한 마음을 품는 자는 누구나 동일한 정신을 품게 되며…

씨앗 속에 식물(植物)이 들어 있는 것같이, 복수의 생각 속에 악한 행동이 들어 있다.…

 

우리의 구속을 위하여 당신의 아들을 선물로 주심으로,

하나님께서는 각인의 영혼을 얼마나 높이 평가하시는지 보여 주셨다.

그분께서는 사람에게 서로 경멸하는 말을 마음대로 할 수 있는 자유를 주지 않으신다.

우리는 주위에 있는 사람들에게서 결점과 약점을 본다.

 

그러나 하나님께서는

모든 사람을 창조를 통한 소유와 그리스도의 보배로운 피의 지불을 통한 소유,

곧 당신의 이중적(二重的) 소유로 주장하신다.

그분의 형상대로 지음을 받은 모든 사람,

심지어 가장 타락한 사람들까지도 존경과 친절로써 대해져야 한다.

하나님께서는 그리스도께서 위하여 목숨을 버리신 한 영혼을 모독하여 한,

한 마디의 말에 대해서도 우리에게 책임을 지우실 것이다.

Every Soul To Be Treated With Respect

Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart....

Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people,

but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Leviticus 19:17, 18.

 

The Saviour’s words revealed to His hearers the fact that,

while they were condemning others as transgressors,

they were themselves equally guilty; for they were cherishing malice and hatred....

 

They cherished the most bitter hatred of their Roman oppressors

and felt themselves at liberty to hate and despise all other peoples,

and even their own countrymen who did not in all things conform to their ideas.

In all this they were violating the law which declares, “Thou shalt not kill.”

 

The spirit of hate and revenge originated with Satan,

and it led him to put to death the Son of God.

Whoever cherishes malice or unkindness is cherishing the same spirit....

In the revengeful thought the evil deed lies enfolded, as the plant in the seed....

In the gift of His Son for our redemption,

God has shown how high a value He places upon every human soul,

and He gives to no man liberty to speak contemptuously of another.

 

We shall see faults and weaknesses in those about us,

but God claims every soul as His property—His by creation,

and doubly His as purchased by the precious blood of Christ.

 

All were created in His image,

and even the most degraded are to be treated with respect and tenderness.

God will hold us accountable for even a word

spoken in contempt of one soul for whom Christ laid down His life.
