말과 행함

 

 “A certain man had two sons;

and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work today in my vineyard.

He answered and said, I will not; but afterward he repented, and went.

 

And he came to the second, and said likewise.

And he answered and said, I go, sir; and went not.

 

Whether of them twain did the will of his father? 

They say unto him, The first.” 

 

한 사람이 두 아들이 있는 데

맏아들에게 가서 이르되 아들아 오늘 포도원에 가서 일하라 하니

대답하여 가로되 아버지여 가겠소이다 하더니 가지 아니하고,

 

둘째 아들에게 가서 또 이같이 말하니 대답하여 가로되 싫소이다 하더니

그 후에 뉘우치고 갔으니 그 둘 중에 누가 아비의 뜻대로 하였느뇨?

가로되 둘째 아들이니이다...”  - 마태복음 21:28-31

In the sermon on the mount Christ said,

“Not every one that saith unto Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven;

but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 7:21.

 

그리스도께서 산상 설교를 하실 때에 

“나더러 주여 주여 하는 자마다 천국에 들어갈 것이 아니요

다만 하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 뜻대로 행하는 자라야 들어가리라”(마 7:21)고 말씀하셨다. 

The test of sincerity is not in words, but in deeds.

Christ does not say to any man, What say ye more than others?

but, “What do ye more than others?” Matthew 5:47.

 

사람의 진실성의 증거는 말에 있지 아니하고 행실에 있다. 

그리스도께서는 어느 누구에게도

 너희가 남보다 더 나은 말을 하는 것이 무엇이냐고 묻지 않으시고,

“너희가 … 남보다 더 하는 것이 무엇이냐”(마 5:47) 고 물으신다. 

 

Full of meaning are His words,

“If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” John 13:17.

 

“너희가 이것을 알고 행하면 복이 있으리라”(요 13:17)고 하신 그리스도의 말씀은

의미 심장한 말씀이다. 

Words are of no value unless they are accompanied with appropriate deeds.

This is the lesson taught in the parable of the two sons. 

그에 상응하는 행실이 따르지 않는 한 말은 아무 가치도 없다. 

이것이 바로 두 아들의 비유를 통해서 주신 교훈이다.

This parable was spoken at Christ’s last visit to Jerusalem before His death.

 

이 비유는

그리스도께서 돌아가시기 얼마 전에 마지막으로 예루살렘을 방문하셨을 때에

하신 말씀이다.

He had driven out the buyers and sellers from the temple.

His voice had spoken to their hearts with the power of God.

Amazed and terrified, they had obeyed His command without excuse or resistance.
