엘리야는 응답이 올 때까지 기도로 인내하였다

 

엘리야의 경험을 통해 중요한 교훈이 우리에게 제시된다.

갈멜산에서 비가 오도록 기도하였을 때, 그의 믿음은 시험을 받았으나,

그는 끈기 있게 자신의 요구를 하나님께 알렸다.(우리의 높은 부르심, 133)

여섯 번이나 열렬히 기도했으나 그의 애원이 들어졌다는 아무런 표시도 없었지만

강한 믿음으로 그는 은혜의 보좌에 기도를 재촉했다.

그가 여섯 번째 낙심으로 기도를 포기했다면 그의 기도는 응답되지 않았을 것이나

그는 응답이 올 때까지 인내하였다.

 

우리에게는 우리의 탄원에 귀를 막지 않으시는 하나님이 계신다.

만일 우리가 당신의 말씀이 확실하다는 것을 믿는다면,

그분께서는 우리의 믿음을 영광스럽게 하실 것이다.

그분께서는 우리의 모든 관심사가 당신의 관심사와 하나되기를 원하신다.

그리할 때 그분께서는 안심하고 우리를 축복하실 수 있다.

왜냐하면 축복이 우리의 것이 될 그때,

우리는 스스로 영광을 취하지 않고 모든 찬양을 하나님께 돌릴 것이기 때문이다.

 

하나님께서는 우리가 당신을 찾는 첫 시간에 우리의 기도를 응답해 주시지 않는다.

왜냐하면 그분께서 이렇게 하실 경우, 우리는

그분께서 우리에게 부여해 주신 모든 축복과 은총을 누릴 권리를

당연히 가지고 있다고 생각할 수 있기 때문이다.

우리가 어떤 악을 품고 있지는 않는지, 어떤 죄에 빠져 있는지 우리 마음을 살피는 대신에,

우리는 부주의한 가운데 그분을 의지해야 할 필요성을 깨닫지 못할 것이기 때문이다.

 

 

 

Elijah Persevered in Prayer Until the Answer Came

 

Important lessons are presented to us in the experience of Elijah. When upon Mt. Carmel he offered the prayer for rain, his faith was tested, but he persevered in making known his request unto God. Six times he prayed earnestly, and yet there was no sign that his petition was granted, but with a strong faith he urged his plea to the throne of grace. Had he given up in discouragement at the sixth time, his prayer would not have been answered, but he persevered till the answer came. We have a God whose ear is not closed to our petitions; and if we prove His word, He will honor our faith. He wants us to have all our interests interwoven with His interests, and then He can safely bless us; for we shall not then take glory to self when the blessing is ours, but shall render all the praise to God. God does not always answer our prayers the first time we call upon Him; for should He do this, we might take it for granted that we had a right to all the blessings and favors He bestowed upon us. Instead of searching our hearts to see if any evil was entertained by us, any sin indulged, we should become careless, and fail to realize our dependence upon Him, and our need of His help. – Prayer, 139.
