YOU’VE GOT A FRIEND

[Jesus said,] “I have called you friends.” -John 15:15

One of the ironic consequences of the sweeping growth of social media is that we often fi-nd ourselves more personally isolated. one online article warns: “Those who oppose leading one’s life primarily or exclusively online claim that virtual friends are not adequate substitutes for real-world friends, and . . . individuals who substitute virtual friends for physical friends become even lonelier and more depressive than before.” Technology aside, all of us battle with seasons of loneliness, wondering if anyone knows, understands, or cares about the burdens we carry or the struggles we face. But followers of Christ have an assurance that brings comfort to our weary hearts. The comforting presence of the Savior is promised in words that are undeniable, for the psalmist David wrote, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” (Ps. 23:4). Whether isolated by our own choices, by the cultural trends that surround us, or by the painful losses of life, all who know Christ can rest in the presence of the Shepherd of our hearts. 친구가 생겼습니다

[예수께서 말씀하시기를] 너희를 친구라 하였노니-요한복음 15:15

소셜 미디어의 광범위한 성장으로 인해 생긴 아이러니 중의 하나는 종종 우리 자신이 개인적으로 더욱 고립되어 있다는 것을 발견하게 된다는 것입니다. “주로, 혹은 전적으로 온라인을 통해 삶을 영위하는 것에 반대하는 사람들은, 가상의 친구는 현실의 친구를 대신할 수 없고,… 실제의 친구를 가상의 친구로 대체하는 사람들은 그전보다 더 외롭게 되고 더 우울해진다고 주장한다.”라고 어느 온라인 기사가 이렇게 경고합니다. 과학기술은 제쳐두고라도, 우리는 모두 우리가 지고 가는 짐과 시련을 알거나 이해해주거나 걱정해주는 사람이 과연 누가 있을까 의심하면서 인생의 한 시절을 외로움과 싸우고 있습니다. 하지만 그리스도를 따르는 성도들에게는 지친 마음에 위로를 가져다주는 확신이 있습니다. 시편기자 다윗이 “내가 사망의 음침한 골짜기로 다닐지라도 해를 두려워하지 않을 것은 주께서 나와 함께 하심이라 주의 지팡이와 막대기가 나를 안위하시나이다”(시 23:4)라고 기록한 것처럼, 구주께서 함께 하시며 위로하시겠다고 말씀 속에 명백히 약속되어 있습니다. 우리가 선택한 것이든, 우리 주위의 문화 풍조 때문이든, 아니면 죽음으로 인한 가슴 아픈 이별에 의해서든 우리가 외로움을 느낄 때, 그리스도를 영접한 우리들은 모두 우리 마음속에 계시는 목자의 품안에서 쉴 수 있습니다. 예수님은 얼마나 좋은 우리의 친구이신지요!

주 예수 내가 알기 전 날 먼저 사랑했네 그 크신 사랑 나타나 내 영혼 거듭났네

예수님을 친구로 알고 있는 사람들은 결코 외롭지 않다.
