BOTTLED WATER BINGE

Through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men. -Romans 5:18

Here in the United States, we’ve been on a bottled water binge for a number of years. Even though most people have a safe supply of water that is free and readily available from faucets and drinking fountains, they still purchase bottled water. Choosing to pay for something that I can enjoy at no cost doesn’t make sense to me, but some people believe that a product they pay for is superior to anything they receive free. This sometimes carries over into our spiritual lives. Some struggle to accept that salvation is a gift. They want to do something to earn it. The problem is, no one can afford it. The price of salvation is perfection (Matt. 19:21), and Jesus is the only person who could pay the price (Rom. 5:18). To anyone who thirsts, He promises to “give of the fountain of the water of life freely” (Rev. 21:6). Some people try to purchase the living water of salvation with good deeds and charitable donations. Although these are forms of spiritual service valued by God, they are not what God requires for the forgiveness of our sin. Jesus already paid the price by dying in our place, and He offers to quench our spiritual thirst when we drink freely from God’s fountain that will never run dry. -Julie Ackerman Link

한 의로운 행위로 말미암아 많은 사람이 의롭다 하심을 받아 생명에 이르렀느니라-로마서 5:18

미국에서는 사람들이 오랫동안 병 생수를 마구 마셔왔습니다. 대부분의 사람들은 수도와 식수대에서 공짜로 손쉽게 공급되는 물이 안전함에도 불구하고 병에 든 물을 구입합니다. 공짜로 즐길 수 있는 것을 돈을 지불하고 사는 것이 나로서는 이해할 수 없지만, 어떤 사람들은 돈을 지불하는 제품이 공짜로 받는 것보다 더 질이 좋다고 믿습니다. 이 생각은 때때로 우리의 영적생활에까지 이어지고 있습니다. 어떤 사람들은 구원이 선물이라는 것을 받아들이지 못하고, 구원을 얻기 위해 무엇인가를 하고 싶어 합니다. 그러나 문제는 어느 누구도 그렇게 할 능력이 없다는 것입니다. 구원을 얻기 위해서는 완전해야 하는데(마 19:21), 예수님만이 구원의 값을 치르실 수 있는 유일한 분이십니다(롬 5:18). 예수님은 목마른 사람에게 “생명수 샘물을 목마른 자에게 값없이 주리니”(계 21:6)라고 약속하십니다. 어떤 사람들은 선한 행실과 기부행위를 통해 구원의 생수를 사려고 합니다. 비록 그런 것들이 하나님이 인정하시는 영적 섬김의 형태일지라도, 우리의 죄를 용서받기 위한 하나님의 요구조건은 아닙니다. 예수님이 이미 우리를 대신하여 죽으심으로 그 값을 지불하셨고, 결코 메마르지 않을 하나님의 샘으로부터 자유롭게 마심으로써 우리의 영적인 갈증이 해소되도록 하셨습니다.

생명수이신 예수님 한 번 마심으로 우리가 온전케 되네 그 샘물을 매일 끌어올림으로 우리 영혼이 새롭게 되네

예수님은 목마른 영혼을 채워주실 유일한 원천이시다.
