고등 교육의 정의

초기의 제자들에게 주어졌고, 하나님의 말씀 가운데서 우리에게 계시된 것보다 더 높은 교육은 없다.

 

고등 교육을 받는다는 것은

 

1) 이 말씀을 절대적으로 따르는 것을 뜻한다.

2) 그것은 그리스도의 발자취를 따라 행하는 것, 그분의 덕성들을 실천하는 것을 뜻한다.

3) 그것은 이기심을 버리고 하나님의 사업에 생애를 바치는 것을 뜻한다.

4) 고등 교육은 단순히 책에서 얻는 지식보다 더욱 위대하고 더욱 큰 무엇을 요구한다.

5) 그것은 그리스도에 대한 개인적, 체험적 지식을 의미하며,

6) 흑암의 왕자가 주관하는 학교에서 배운 사상, 습관 및 관습들,

즉 하나님께 대한 충성에 반대되는 것들로부터 해방되는 것을 의미한다.

따라서 완고한 정신, 교만, 이기심 및 세속적인 야심과 불신을 극복하는 것을 뜻한다.

 

그것은 죄로부터의 구원에 관한 기별이다.

 

마음에 영감을 불어넣음

—하나님의 말씀 가운데서 마음은 가장 깊은 사상과 가장 숭고한 포부의 주제를 발견하게 된다.

여기서 우리는 부조들과 선지자들과 교통할 수 있으며,

영원하신 분께서 인류에게 말씀하시는 음성을 들을 수 있다.

여기서 우리는 하늘의 폐하께서 당신 자신을 낮추시사 우리의 대속주와 보증인이 되셨고,

단독으로 흑암의 권세들과 겨루사 우리 인간을 위하여 승리를 얻으신 것을 볼 수 있다.

 

이러한 주제들에 대한 경건한 묵상은

틀림없이 심령을 부드럽게 하고 순결하게 하며 고귀하게 하는 동시에

새로운 힘과 기운을 정신에 불어넣어 줄 것이다.

 

Higher Education Defined

 

There is no education to be gained higher than that given to the early disciples, and which is revealed to us through the Word of God. To gain the higher education means to follow this Word implicitly; it means to walk in the footsteps of Christ, to practice His virtues. It means to give up selfishness and to devote the life to the service of God.

Higher education calls for something greater, something more divine, than the knowledge to be obtained merely from books. It means a personal, experimental knowledge of Christ; it means emancipation from ideas, from habits and practices, that have been gained in the school of the prince of darkness and which are opposed to loyalty to God. It means to overcome stubbornness, pride, selfishness, worldly ambition, and unbelief. It is the message of deliverance from sin.-Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, 11, 12 (1913).

Inspires the Mind.-In the Word of God the mind finds subjects for the deepest thought, the loftiest aspirations. Here we may hold communion with patriarchs and prophets and listen to the voice of the Eternal as He speaks with men. Here we behold the Majesty of heaven as He humbled Himself to become our substitute and surety, to cope single-handed with the powers of darkness, and to gain the victory in our behalf. A reverent contemplation of such themes as these cannot fail to soften, purify, and ennoble the heart, and at the same time to inspire the mind with new strength and vigor.-Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, 52, 53 (1913).
