작은 일에 봉사함

 

작은 일은 어떻게 하든지 상관없다고 생각하는 사람은

자기 자신이 보다 높은 직분을 맡기에 부적합하다는 것을 증거하는 것이다...

그는 전적인 복종을 통해서 받을 수 있는 은혜와 능력과 품성의 힘을 받지 못한다.

 

직접적으로 어떤 종교적 사업에 관계하고 있지 않기 때문에 저희 생애는 무용하고

저희는 하나님의 나라를 촉진시키는 일에 아무 것도 하고 있지 않다고 느끼는 사람들이 많다.

만일 그들이 어떤 큰일을 할 수 있게 된다면 얼마나 큰 기쁨으로 그 일을 떠맡을 것인가!

그러나 저희가 작은 일에만 봉사할 수 있는 까닭에 그들은 아무 일도 하지 않아도 괜찮다고 스스로 생각한다. 그것은 잘못된 생각이다.

평범한 매일의 의무에 종사하는 동안, 곧 나무를 베고 정지 작업을 하고 농사를 짓는 동안

하나님을 위해 적극적으로 봉사할 수 있다.

그리스도를 위하여 자녀들을 양육하는 어머니는 목사가 설교하는 것과 마찬가지로

참으로 하나님을 위하여 일하고 있는 것이다.

 

그 일들을 수행함으로 생활을 향기롭게 할 수 있는, 손 가까이에 있는 의무들은 돌아보지 않으면서

놀랄 만한 사업을 할 수 있는 특별한 재능을 갈망하는 사람들이 많다.

이러한 사람들로 하여금 바로 저희 앞길에 놓인 의무를 수행하도록 하라.

성공은 재능보다 정력과 자발성에 더욱 많이 달려 있다.

 

우리들로 하여금 받으실 만한 봉사를 할 수 있게 하는 것은

훌륭한 재능이 아니라 매일의 의무를 양심적으로 수행하고 만족하게 여기는 정신,

다른 사람들의 복리에 대하여 소박하고 진실한 관심을 가지는 정신에 있다.

가장 천한 형편에서 참된 미덕을 발견할 수 있다.

성실하고 충실하게 수행한 가장 평범한 일들이 하나님이 보시기에 아름다운 것이다.

 

Service in Little Things

 

 

He who feels that it is of no consequence how he performs the smaller tasks proves himself unfit for a more honored position... He fails of gaining the grace, the power, the force of character, which is received through unreserved surrender.

Because they are not connected with some directly religious work, many feel that their lives are useless, that they are doing nothing for the advancement of God's kingdom. If they could do some great thing how gladly they would undertake it! But because they can serve only in little things, they think themselves justified in doing nothing. In this they err. A man may be in the active service of God while engaged in the ordinary, everyday duties--while felling trees, clearing the ground, or following the plow. The mother who trains her children for Christ is as truly working for God as is the minister in the pulpit.

Many long for special talent with which to do a wonderful work, while the duties lying close at hand, the performance of which would make the life fragrant, are lost sight of. Let such ones take up the duties lying directly in their pathway. Success depends not so much on talent as on energy and willingness. It is not the possession of splendid talents that enables us to render acceptable service, but the conscientious performance of daily duties, the contented spirit, the unaffected, sincere interest in the welfare of others. In the humblest lot true excellence may be found. The commonest tasks, wrought with loving faithfulness, are beautiful in God's sight. – Prophets and Kings, 218-9.
