현명한 교육자는 학생들을 대할 때 신뢰감과 명예심을 나타내는 일에 노력해야 한다.

신뢰받고 있다는 느낌은 아이들과 청년들에게 유익한 것이다.

 

아이들일지라도 대부분은 높은 명예심을 갖고 있고, 신뢰와 존경을 받고 싶어한다.

이것은 또한 그들의 당연한 권리이기도 하다.

아이들이 들어가거나 나가거나 언제나 감시를 받고 있다는 기분을 느끼게 하지 말라.

 

미심쩍게 보여지고 있다는 사실은

사람의 기를 꺾고, 도리어 방어하려는 해악이 생기게 하는 것이다.

 

무슨 나쁜 짓을 하지 않았나 하고 언제나 감시하는 대신,

교사는 학생들과 접촉하여, 그들이 멋모르고 저지른 행동들을 분별하여

더 이상 나쁜 일을 하지 못하도록 잘 계몽해야 한다.

 

청소년들은 자신이 신뢰를 받고 있다는 느낌을 가지게 되면

대개는 자기가 그 신뢰를 받기에 합당한 사람이라는 것을 입증해 보이려고 노력할 것이다.

 

이와 같은 원칙으로, 명령하는 것보다는 부탁하는 것이 좋다.

그렇게 부탁받은 학생은

자신이 올바른 원칙에 충실하다는 것을 스스로 입증할 기회를 가지게 된다.

 

그의 순종은 강제적인 것이 아닌 선택의 결과인 것이다.

🌻 Aroma of Life • Obedience is the Result of Choice Rather Than Compulsion 🌻

 

The wise educator, in dealing with his pupils, will seek to encourage confidence and to strengthen the sense of honor. Children and youth are benefited by being trusted.

 

Many, even of the little children, have a high sense of honor; all desire to be treated with confidence and respect, and this is their right. They should not be led to feel that they cannot go out or come in without being watched.

 

Suspicion demoralizes, producing the very evils it seeks to prevent.

 

Instead of watching continually, as if suspecting evil, teachers who are in touch with their pupils will discern the workings of the restless mind, and will set to work influences that will counteract evil.

 

Lead the youth to feel that they are trusted, and there are few who will not seek to prove themselves worthy of the trust.

 

On the same principle it is better to request than to command; the one thus addressed has opportunity to prove himself loyal to right principles.

 

His obedience is the result of choice rather than compulsion.
