‘Be calm and strong’과 ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’

윤석열 검찰총장이 SNS 프로필에 써놓은

‘Be calm and strong’ 문구가 화제(the talk of the town)다.

‘차분하고 강인하라’는 뜻으로, 소설 ‘노인과 바다’에 나오는 표현이다.

먼바다에서 자신의 몸집보다 큰 청새치와

사투를 벌이는(engage in a life or death struggle with a marlin) 노인이

스스로 격려하며(encourage himself) 내뱉는 말이다.

 

‘결정론’과 ‘자유의지’ 간의 다툼(strife between determinism and freewill)을 그린

이 소설의 주인공(protagonist)은 자유의지의 상징이다.

 

결정론은 인간이 상황의 힘(circumstantial forces) 아래 움직이게 돼 있다고 말한다.

외부 압력에 순종할 수밖에 없다고(be forced to obey the external forces) 단정한다.

 

자유의지는 ‘네’라고 해야 할 때 ‘네’ 하고, ‘아니요’라고 해야 할 때 ‘아니요’ 할 수 있는

의지를 뜻한다.

시련과 핍박에 비열해지지(stoop to hardships or persecutions) 않고

불리한 상황에 굴복하지(submit to the adverse situations) 않는다.

 

노인은 84일간 새벽부터 해 질 녘까지(from dawn to dusk)

고생하고도 빈손으로 돌아오지만(return empty-handed),

다시 더 먼바다로 나가 마침내 청새치를 잡아올린다.

 

‘Keep Calm and Carry On’이란 표현도 있다.

‘차분함을 지키며 하던 일을 계속하라’는 의미다.

영국 정부가 1939년 제2차 대전 직전 독일의 대규모 공습(mass air raid)이 예고된 가운데

국민 사기를 북돋우려(in a bid to raise the morale) 만든 포스터 문구다.

 

역경 속에서도 평정심을 유지하면서(remain calm in adversity)

의연하게 버텨나가자는(carry a stiff upper lip) 구호였다.

세 종류 시리즈 중 마지막 것이었다.

 

첫 번째 것은 ‘Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution Will Bring Us Victory’였다.

‘당신의 용기와 생기와 결의가 승리를 가져다 주리라”는 의미였다.

종전 때까지 모든 사람 입에 오르내리는(be on everyone’s lips) 구호가 됐다.

 

두 번째 포스터는 ‘Freedom is in Peril. Defend it With All Your Might

(자유가 위험에 처했다. 당신의 모든 힘을 다해 지켜라)’였다.

국민의 전폭적 지지를 이끌어내면서(win the hearts and minds of the people)

승전의 기틀을 마련했다(pave the way for the victory).

 

세 번째인 ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’은

나치가 영국을 점령하는 최악 상황에 대비한(prepare for the worst) 구호였다.

약 250만 부를 찍었으나, 배포되지는(be distributed) 않았다.

보관 상태에 있다가 1940년 4월까지 해당 포스터를 쓸 상황이 벌어지지 않자

재생지 재료로 사용됐다(be pulped).

 

코로나19 와중에도 국민들은 ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ 하고 있다.

하지만 정치판 악성 바이러스들의 나라 점령 시도에는 언제까지 ‘keep calm’ 하고 있을지

예측 불허 상황(unforeseeable circumstances)이다.
