습관은 폭정

사탄은 그리스도께 나아갔을 때처럼 빛의 천사로 가장한 채 유혹을 가지고 사람에게 다가간다.

사단은 자신의 시험들로 사람을 정복하고, 그가 파멸하는 것을 보고 환호할 수 있도록 하기 위해

육체적, 도덕적으로 병약한 상태에 빠뜨리려고 노력해 왔다. 

그리하여 그는 사람을 유혹하여, 결과에 개의치 않고 정욕에 방종하도록 하는 데 성공해 왔다.

하나님께서 사람에게 주신 재능을 손상시키고 있는 한,

사람이 하나님과 인류에 대한 자신의 의무를 완수할 수 없으리라는 것을 사탄은 잘 알고 있다. 

두뇌는 신체의 중추이다.

만일 여하한 종류의 부절제를 통하여 인식 기능이 마비되면, 영원한 사물을 분별할 수 없게 된다.

정신력의 강함이나 약함은

우리가 세상에 유용한 인물이 되고 또한 우리의 최후의 구원을 얻는 일과 많은 관계가 있다.

이때까지 많은 사람들에 의해 우리의 신체에 관한 하나님의 법칙이 무시되어 온 것은 개탄할 만한 일이다. 

어떠한 종류의 것이든지 부절제는 우리의 신체의 법칙을 범하는 것이다.

우둔함이 놀라울 정도로 성행하고 있다. 

사탄은 죄를 빛의 덮개로 덮어 씌워서, 매력적으로 보이게 하고 있다.

그리고 그는 그리스도교 세계를 그들의 일상 습관에서 이방 사람들처럼 습관의 폭정 밑에 붙들어 놓고,

식욕이 그들을 지배하도록 만들 수 있을 때에 심히 기뻐한다.

The Tyranny of Custom

Satan comes to man with his temptations as an angel of light, as he came to Christ. He has been working to bring man into a condition of physical and moral weakness that he may overcome him with his temptations and then triumph over his ruin. 

And he has been successful in tempting man to indulge appetite, regardless of the result. He well knows that it is impossible for man to discharge his obligations to God and to his fellowmen while he impairs the faculties God has given him. 

The brain is the capital of the body. If the perceptive faculties become benumbed through intemperance of any kind, eternal things are not discerned.

The strength or the weakness of the mind has very much to do with our usefulness in this world and with our final salvation. The ignorance that has prevailed in regard to God’s law in our physical nature is deplorable. 

Intemperance of any kind is a violation of the laws of our being. Imbecility is prevailing to a fearful extent. 

Sin is made attractive by the covering of light which Satan throws over it, and he is well pleased when he can hold the Christian world in their daily habits under the tyranny of custom, like the heathen, and allow appetite to govern them.
