매 맞은 반석

“내가 거기서 호렙산 반석 위에 너를 대하여 서리니

너는 반석을 치라 그곳에서 물이 나리니 백성이 마시리라

모세가 이스라엘 장로들의 목전에서 그대로 행하니라”(출 17:6). 

모세가 친 반석은 그리스도의 표상이었고 이 상징을 통하여 가장 귀중하고 신령한 진리가 가르쳐졌다. 

생명을 주는 물이 모세가 친 반석에서 흘러나온 것처럼

“하나님에게 맞으며…우리의 허물을” 인하여 찔리시고

”우리의 죄악을” 인하여(사 53:4, 5)상하신 그리스도께로부터 잃어버린 인류를 위한 구원의 시냇물이 흐른다. 

반석이 한 번 침을 당했던 것처럼

그리스도께서도 ”많은 사람의 죄를 담당하시려고 단번에 드리신바 되”(히 9:28)실 것이었다. 

우리의 구주께서는 두 번 희생당하지 않으실 것이었다.

그리스도의 은혜의 축복을 구하는 자들은 예수의 이름으로 구하고,

회개하는 기도로써 마음의 소망을 토로하기만 하면 된다. 

이와같은 기도는 만군의 여호와 앞에 예수의 상처를 가져갈 것이다.

그리하면 이스라엘 백성을 위한 생수의 흐름으로 상징된 생명을 주는 피가 다시 흘러내리게 될 것이다. 

바싹 마른 불모의 땅에…흘러내린 샘물은 그리스도께서만이 주실 수 있는 생수로써,

영혼을 정결케 하고 새롭게 하고 활력을 주는 하나님의 은혜의 상징이다. 

그리스도께서 내재하시는 사람은 그 속에 결코 다함이 없는 은혜와 능력의 샘을 가지고 있다.

The Smitten Rock

Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. Exodus 17:6.

The smitten rock was a figure of Christ, and through this symbol the most precious spiritual truths are taught. 

As the life-giving waters flowed from the smitten rock, so from Christ, “smitten of God,” “wounded for our transgressions,” “bruised for our iniquities” (Isaiah 53:4, 5), the stream of salvation flows for a lost race. 

As the rock had been once smitten, so Christ was to be “once offered to bear the sins of many” (Hebrews 9:28). 

Our Saviour was not to be sacrificed a second time; and it is only necessary for those who seek the blessings of His grace to ask in the name of Jesus, pouring forth the heart’s desire in penitential prayer. 

Such prayer will bring before the Lord of hosts the wounds of Jesus, and then will flow forth afresh the life-giving blood, symbolized by the flowing of the living water for Israel....

The refreshing water, welling up in a parched and barren land, ... is an emblem of the divine grace which Christ alone can bestow, and which is as the living water purifying, refreshing, and invigorating the soul. 

He in whom Christ is abiding has within him a never-failing fountain of grace and strength.
