하나님의 말씀을 통하여 얻은 지식

 

전체적인 성경은 그리스도 안에 있는 하나님의 영광의 계시이다.

받아들이고, 믿고, 순종하면, 그것은 품성의 변화에 큰 도구가 된다.

그리고 그것은 지적 계발의 유일하고 확실한 수단이다.

젊은이들과 심지어 성년층의 사람들까지도 너무도 쉽게 유혹과 죄에 빠지는 이유는

그들이 하나님의 말씀을 연구하지 않고 당연히 해야 할만큼 그것에 대하여 명상하지 않기 때문이다. 

생애와 품성에 나타나는 확고하고 단호한 의지력의 부족은

그들이 하나님의 말씀의 거룩한 교훈을 등한히 하는 데서 온다. 

그들은 진지한 노력에 의하여 순결하고 거룩한 생각을 고취시켜 주는 것을 향하도록 마음을 지도하지 않고

불순하고 거짓된 것으로부터 마음을 분리시키지 않는다. 

더 좋은 편을 택하는 자, 거룩한 교사에게서 배우기 위해 마리아처럼 예수님의 발아래 앉는 자는 별로 없다. 그분의 말씀을 마음속에 간직하고 그것을 생애에서 실천하는 자는 별로 없다.  

성경의 진리들을 받아들이면 마음을 세속과 타락으로부터 구원해 줄 것이다.

만일 하나님의 말씀이 당연할 만큼 그 진가를 인정받는다면

노유를 막론하고 그들이 유혹을 저항할 수 있는 마음의 염직 (廉直), 곧 원칙의 힘을 소유하게 될 것이다.  

사람들이 성경에 있는 귀중한 것들을 가르치고 기록하도록 하라.

생각과 재능과 예민한 정신력의 활용이 하나님의 사상을 연구하는 데 바쳐져야 한다. 

사람의 추측에서 나온 철학을 연구하지 말고, 진리가 되시는 분의 철학을 연구하라.

이것과 비교하면 다른 저술은 거의 가치가 없다. 

세속적인 마음은 하나님의 말씀을 명상하는 데서 기쁨을 찾지 못한다.

그러나 성령으로 새로워진 마음에는

거룩한 책의 페이지에서부터 하나님의 아름다움과 하늘의 빛이 비추인다. 

곧 세속적인 마음에는 황량한 광야였던 것이 영적인 마음에는 생명수의 강이 있는 땅이 된다.

The Knowledge Received through God’s Word

The whole Bible is a revelation of the glory of God in Christ. Received, believed, obeyed, it is the great instrumentality in the transformation of character. And it is the only sure means of intellectual culture.

The reason why the youth, and even those of mature years, are so easily led into temptation and sin is that they do not study the word of God and meditate upon it as they should. 

The lack of firm, decided will power, which is manifest in life and character, results from their neglect of the sacred instruction of God’s word. 

They do not by earnest effort direct the mind to that which would inspire pure, holy thought and divert it from that which is impure and untrue. 

There are few who choose the better part, who sit at the feet of Jesus, as did Mary, to learn of the divine Teacher. 

Few treasure His words in the heart and practice them in the life.

The truths of the Bible, received, will uplift the mind from its earthliness and debasement. If the word of God were as it should be, both young and old would possess an inward rectitude, a strength of principle, that would enable them to resist temptation.

Let men teach and write the precious things of the Holy Scriptures. Let the thought, the aptitude, the keen exercise of brain power, be given to the study of the thoughts of God. 

Study not the philosophy of man’s conjectures, but study the philosophy of Him who is truth. Other literature is of little value when compared with this.

The mind that is earthly finds no pleasure in contemplating the word of God; but for the mind renewed by the Holy Spirit, divine beauty and celestial light shine from the sacred page. 

That which to the earthly mind was a desolate wilderness, to the spiritual mind becomes a land of living streams.
