유일하고 완전무결한 모본

“이를 위하여 너희가 부르심을 입었으니 그리스도도 너희를 위하여 고난을 받으사

너희에게 본을 끼쳐 그 자취를 따라오게 하려 하셨느니라”(벧전 2:21)

그리스도께서는 모든 것을 요구하신다. 
만일, 그분께서 그보다 적게 요구하신다면,

그런 수준에 이르게 하고자 치러진 그분의 희생은 너무도 비싸고 큰 것이었다. … 
“너희는 … 오직 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받”(롬 12:2)으라. 

이것은 자아 부정의 길이다. 
길이 너무 좁고, 이 좁은 길에서 자아를 부정해야 할 일이 너무 많다고 생각되거든,

모든 것을 버리는 것이 얼마나 힘드는가 하는 말이 나오거든, 
그리스도께서 나를 위하여 무엇을 버리셨는가라고 자문해 보라. 
이 질문은 우리가 자아 부정이라고 부를 수 있는 어떠한 것이라도 그 그늘 속에서 사라져 버리게 할 것이다. 
... 
그대에게는 유일하게 참되고 거짓이 없는 모본이 있다. 

오직 예수님만을 따르는 것이 안전하다. … 

그대들이 더 자주, 그리고 더 부지런히 성경을 숙독하면 할수록,

성경은 더욱 아름답게 나타나고, 경박한 독서를 더욱 싫어하게 될 것이다. 

성경을 매일 연구하면, 거룩하게 하는 감화를 마음에 받게 될 것이다. 
그대는 하늘의 분위기를 호흡하게 될 것이다. 

이 귀중한 책을 그대의 마음에 묶어 두라. 
그리하면, 그것이 친구가 되고, 어려울 때 안내가 된다는 것이 입증될 것이다.

이제 그대들 앞에는 참을성 있고 꾸준하게 평생 동안 노력할 가치가 있는 목표가 있다.

그것은 그대들의 영혼의 구원 곧 영생이다.

그리고, 그것은 극기와 희생과 면밀한 연구를 요구한다. …

Only one Unerring Pattern

Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow his steps. 1 Peter 2:21

Christ demands all. 
If He required less, His sacrifice was too dear, too great to make to bring us up to such a level.... 
“Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” 

This is a self-denying way. 
And when you think that the way is too strait, that there is too much self-denial in this narrow path; when you say, How hard to give up all, 
ask yourselves the question, What did Christ give up for me? 
This question puts anything that we may call self-denial in the shade
...
You have only one true, unerring Pattern. 
It is safe to follow Jesus only.

The oftener and more diligently you peruse the Scriptures, the more beautiful will they appear, and the less relish you will have for light reading. .

The daily study of the Scriptures will have a sanctifying influence upon the mind. 

You will breathe a heavenly atmosphere. 
Bind this precious volume to your hearts. 
It will prove to you a friend and guide in perplexity.

There is an object before you now worthy of a persevering, untiring, lifelong effort. It is the salvation of your soul—everlasting life. And this demands self-denial, sacrifice, and close study....
