가장 필요한 것

“너희가 … 내 증인이 되리라”(행 1:8) 하신 예수님의 말씀은 지금도 그 효력이 조금도 감소되지 않았다.

우리 구주께서는 오늘날 형식적인 신앙이 성행하는 이 세대에 신실한 증인을 요구하신다. 

그러나, 그리스도의 대사라 공언하는 자들 중에서도

주님을 위하여 진실한 개인적인 증언을 할 수 있는 자가 얼마나 적은가! 

과거에 살았던 위인들이 행한 업적과 그들이 모험하고 고난과 기쁨을 당하였던 경험을 이야기할 수 있는 사람은 많다. 또, 그들은 복음의 능력을 설명하는 구사력이 있어서

다른 사람들로 하여금 어려운 역경 가운데서도 기뻐하며

아무리 격렬한 시험을 당할지라도 요동하지 않고 능히 굳게 서게 한다. 

그러나, 그들은 다른 신자들을 예수의 증인이 되게 하는 데는 매우 열심이나

그 자신은 남에게 들려줄 적절한 아무 새로운 경험이 없는 듯하다.

그리스도의 사역자들이여!

그대는 자신에 관해 무엇을 말할 수 있는가?

또, 자신과 다른 사람의 행복과 하나님의 영광을 위하여 어떠한 심적 투쟁을 경험하였는가?

세상에 마지막 엄숙한 은혜의 기별을 전한다고 공언하는 그대여!

그대는 진리를 얼마나 알고 있으며 또 진리가 그대의 마음 가운데 어떠한 영향을 끼쳤는가?

그대의 품성은 그리스도를 위하여 증거하는가?

그대는 예수님 안에 있는 순전하고 고상하고 성결케 하는 진리의 감화력에 대하여 이야기할 수 있는가?

그대는 그리스도의 능력에 대하여 무엇을 보고 무엇을 알고 있는가? 

주께서 요구하시는 증거는 곧 이런 것들이며 오늘날 교회에게 요구되는 것도 이것이다.

그리스도를 개인의 구주로 받아들이는 산 믿음이 없이는

회의의 세상에서 우리의 믿음을 나타내기란 불가능한 것이다.

급히 흐르는 물결 가운데서 죄인을 건져 내려면 미끄러운 곳에 발을 딛지 말아야 한다.

우리는 항상 그리스도의 새로운 계시 곧 그분의 교훈과 일치하는 매일의 경험이 필요하다.

우리는 능히 높고 거룩한 지식을 얻을 수 있으며,

하나님께서 우리에게 대하여 목적하신 바도 역시 우리가 지식과 선행 가운데서 끊임없이 향상하는 것이다.

하나님의 율법은

모든 사람들을 향하여 “더 높이 오르라. 거룩하고 더욱 거룩하라”고 외치시는 하나님의 음성의 메아리다.

우리는 날마다 그리스도인의 품성을 완전히 형성하는 가운데 향상할 수 있다.

주의 사업에 종사하는 자들은

아직까지 다른 많은 사람들이 가졌다고 생각하는 경험보다도 더 높고 깊고 넓은 경험을 가져야 한다.

Our Greatest Need

“Ye shall be witnesses unto Me.” [Acts 1:8.] These words of Jesus have lost none of their force. Our Saviour calls for faithful witnesses in these days of religious formalism; but how few, even among the professed ambassadors for Christ, are ready to give a faithful, personal testimony for their Master! 

Many can tell what the great and good men of generations past have done, and dared, and suffered, and enjoyed. They become eloquent in setting forth the power of the gospel, which has enabled others to rejoice in trying conflicts, and to stand firm against fierce temptations. But while so earnest in bringing forward other Christians as witnesses for Jesus, they seem to have no fresh, timely experience of their own to relate.

Ministers of Christ, what have you to say for yourselves? What soul conflicts have you experienced that have been for your good, for the good of others, and for the glory of God? You who profess to be proclaiming the last solemn message of mercy to the world, what is your experience in the knowledge of the truth, and what has been its effect upon your own hearts? Does your character testify for Christ? Can you speak of the refining, ennobling, sanctifying influence of the truth as it is in Jesus? What have you seen, what have you known, of the power of Christ? 

This is the kind of witness for which the Lord calls, and for which the churches are suffering.

Without a living faith in Christ as a personal Saviour, it is impossible to make your faith felt in a skeptical world. If you would draw sinners out of the swift-running current, your own feet must not stand on slippery places.

We need constantly a fresh revelation of Christ, a daily experience that harmonizes with His teachings. High and holy attainments are within our reach. Continual progress in knowledge and virtue is God’s purpose for us. His law is the echo of His own voice, giving to all the invitation, “Come up higher; be holy, holier still.” Every day we may advance in perfection of Christian character.

Those who are engaged in service for the Master need an experience much higher, deeper, broader, than many have yet thought of having.
