쓴 잔은 인내와 오래 참음과 기도로서 달게 될 수 있다

 

나는 하나님께서 당신의 백성들을 정화시키시고 깨끗게 하기 위하여

그들에게 쓴 잔을 마시도록 하시는 것을 보았다.

 

그것은 쓰디쓴 잔이다.

그런데 그들은 불평하고 한탄하고 투덜거림으로서 그 잔을 더욱 쓰게 할 수 있다.

이런 식으로 잔을 받는 자들은 또 다른 잔을 더 마셔야 하는데

그 까닭은 첫번째 잔이 그의 마음에 소기의 성과를 거두지 못했기 때문이다.

 

만일 두번째 잔도 효과를 나타내지 못하면

저들은 소기의 목적을 이룰 때까지 또 다른 잔을 계속 마셔야 한다.

그렇게 하지 않으면 그들의 마음속에 더럽고 불결한 것들이 그냥 남아 있을 것이다.

 

나는 이 쓴 잔이 인내와 오래 참음과 기도로서 달게 될 수 있음을 보았는데,

그것은 그렇게 받아들이는 자들의 마음속에 의도한 효과를 나타낼 것이며,

하나님께서는 영광과 존귀를 받으시게 될 것이다.

 

그리스도인이 되고 또 하나님을 시인하고 인정하는 것은 작은 일이 아니다.

주님께서 나에게 현대 진리를 믿는다고 공언하면서도 그것과 일치하는 생활을 살지 않는 사람들을 보여 주셨다.

경건에 대한 그들의 표준은 너무 낮아서 성경의 거룩함과는 너무나 거리가 멀다.

어떤 이들은 자만의 길로 들어서고 있었다.

우리는 자신을 기쁘게 하고 세상 사람들이 사는 것 같이 살아서는 안 되며

세상 열락을 즐기고 세상에 속한 사람들과 교제하기를 좋아해서는 안 된다.

우리는 오직 영광중에서 그리스도와 함께 동행해야 한다.

Bitter Cup Can Be Sweetened by Patience, Endurance, and Prayer

 

God has shown me that He gave His people a bitter cup to drink, to purify and cleanse them. It is a bitter draught, and they can make it still more bitter by murmuring, complaining, and repining. But those who receive it thus must have another draught, for the first does not have its designed effect upon the heart. And if the second does not effect the work, then they must have another, and another, until it does have its designed effect, or they will be left filthy, impure in heart.

I saw that this bitter cup can be sweetened by patience, endurance, and prayer, and that it will have its designed effect upon the hearts of those who thus receive it, and God will be honored and glorified. It is no small thing to be a Christian and to be owned and approved of God. The Lord has shown me some who profess the present truth, whose lives do not correspond with their profession. They have the standard of piety altogether too low, and they come far short of Bible holiness. Some engage in vain and unbecoming conversation, and others give way to the risings of self.

We must not expect to please ourselves, live and act like the world, have its pleasures, and enjoy the company of those who are of the world, and reign with Christ in glory.
