보잘것없는 제물

A Pitiful Offering

 

건강을 유지하도록, 먹고 마시며 옷 입는 방법에 관한 지식을 얻어야 한다. 

병은 건강 법칙을 범한 까닭으로 발생한다. 

그러므로 병은 천연의 법칙을 범한 결과이다. 

 

Knowledge must be gained in regard to how to eat, and drink, and dress

so as to preserve health.

Sickness is caused by violating the laws of health;

it is the result of violating nature’s law. 

 

우리가 하나님과 우리 자신에게, 그리고 우리 동료 인간들에게 지고 있는 첫째 의무는

건강 법칙을 포함한 하나님의 율법을 순종하는 것이다. 

 

Our first duty, one which we owe to God, to ourselves, and to our fellow men,

is to obey the laws of God, which include the laws of health.

 

만일 우리가 병든다면, 우리는 친구들에게 무거운 부담을 지우며

우리 가족들과 이웃들에 대한 우리의 의무를 수행하는 데 스스로 부적합하게 될 것이다. 

 

 If we are sick, we impose a weary tax upon our friends,

and unfit ourselves for discharging our duties to our families and to our neighbors.

 

그리고 천연계의 법칙을 범한 결과로 일찍 죽는다면, 

우리는 다른 사람들에게 슬픔과 고통을 안겨주게 된다. 

그리고 우리가 살아서 그들에게 마땅히 주었어야 할 도움을 우리 이웃에게 주지 못하게 된다. 

우리 가족들에게 줄 수 있었을지도 모르는 위로와 도움을 우리 가족에게서 빼앗으며

주님께서 당신의 영광을 드러내라고 우리에게 요구하시는 그 봉사를

하나님에게서 탈취하게 된다. 

 

And when premature death is the result of our violation of nature’s law,

we bring sorrow and suffering to others;

we deprive our neighbors of the help we ought to render them in living;

we rob our families of the comfort and help we might render them,

and rob God of the service He claims of us to advance His glory.

 

그렇다면 우리는 가장 나쁜 의미에 있어서, 하나님의 율법을 범하는 자들이 아니겠는가?

 

Then, are we not, in the worst sense, transgressors of God’s law?

 

그러나 하나님께서는 아주 동정심이 많으시며 은혜로우시고 부드러우시다. 

그러므로 죄스러운 방종으로 건강을 손상시킨 사람들에게 빛이 이르러올 때에

그들이 죄를 깨닫고 회개하여 용서를 구하면, 

그분께서는 당신께 돌려 드리는 그 보잘것없는 제물을 받으시며 그들을 받아주실 것이다. 

 

But God is all-pitiful, gracious, and tender,

and when light comes to those who have injured their health by sinful indulgences,

and they are convinced of sin, and repent and seek pardon,

He accepts the poor offering rendered to Him, and receives them.

 

오, 고통당하며 뉘우치는 죄인들이 남용하고 남은 생애를 거절하시지 않으시는

그분의 자비가 얼마나 부드러우신가! 

그분께서는 당신의 은혜로우신 자비로 이 영혼들을 불에서 꺼내듯이 구원하신다. 

그러나 순결하고 거룩하신 하나님께 드리는 것이 기껏 해야 얼마나 보잘것없고 가련한 희생인가!

 

Oh, what tender mercy

that He does not refuse the remnant of the abused life of the suffering, repenting sinner!

In His gracious mercy, He saves these souls as by fire.

But what an inferior, pitiful sacrifice at best, to offer to a pure and holy God!
