Rejoice Not When Thine Enemy Falleth

네 원수가 넘어질 때에 즐거워하지 말라

 

“Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth.”

“If he that hateth thee be hungry, give him bread to eat;

and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink.” Proverbs 24:17; Proverbs 25:21, 22.

 

The whole earthly life of Jesus was a manifestation of this principle.

It was to bring the bread of life to His enemies that our Saviour left His home in heaven.

Though calumny and persecution were heaped upon Him from the cradle to the grave,

they called forth from Him only the ｅxpression of forgiving love.

 

Through the prophet Isaiah He says,

 

“I gave My back to the smiters, and My cheeks to them that plucked off the hair:

I hid not My face from shame and spitting.”

 

“He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth:

He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb,

so He openeth not His mouth.” Isaiah 50:6; 53:7.

 

And from the cross of Calvary there come down through the ages

His prayer for His murderers and the message of hope to the dying thief.

 

“네 원수가 넘어질 때에 즐거워하지 말며”(잠언 24장 17절),

“네 원수가 배고파하거든 식물을 먹이고 목말라 하거든 물을 마시우라”(잠언 25장 21절).

 

예수님의 지상 생애는 전부가 이 원칙을 나타내는 생애였다. 

우리 구주께서 하늘의 집을 떠나신 것은 원수들에게 생명의 양식을 가져다 주시기 위함이었다. 

그분께서는 비록 요람에서부터 무덤에 이르기까지 중상과 핍박을 쌓일 정도로 많이 받으셨지만

그때마다 용서와 사랑만을 나타내셨다. 

 

이사야 선지자를 통하여 그분은 이렇게 말씀하신다. 

 

“나를 때리는 자들에게 내 등을 맡기며 나의 수염을 뽑는 자들에게 나의 뺨을 맡기며

수욕과 침 뱉음을 피하려고 내 얼굴을 가리우지 아니하였느니라”(이사야 50장 6절). “

 

그가 곤욕을 당하여 괴로울 때에도 그 입을 열지 아니하였음이여

마치 도수장으로 끌려가는 어린 양과 털 깎는 자 앞에 잠잠한 양같이

그 입을 열지 아니하였도다”(이사야53장 7절). 

 

당신을 죽게 한 자들을 위한 기도와, 죽어 가는 도둑에게 전한 소망의 기별은

갈바리의 십자가를 통해 각 시대로 전달되고 있다.

 

The Father’s presence encircled Christ,

and nothing befell Him but that which infinite love permitted for the blessing of the world.

Here was His source of comfort, and it is for us.

 

He who is imbued with the Spirit of Christ abides in Christ.

The blow that is aimed at him falls upon the Saviour,

who surrounds him with His presence.

Whatever comes to him comes from Christ.

He has no need to resist evil, for Christ is his defense.

Nothing can touch him except by our Lord’s permission,

and “all things” that are permitted “work together for good to them that love God.”

- Romans 8:28.    

 

아버지의 임재(臨在)가 그리스도를 두르고 있었으므로, 

무한한 사랑이 세상의 축복을 위하여 허락하는 것 외에는 아무것도 그분께 닥치지 않았다. 

여기에 그분의 위로의 근원이 있었으며, 이것은 우리를 위한 것이다. 

 

그리스도의 영으로 감동되는 사람은 그리스도 안에 거하게 된다. 

이 사람을 겨냥한 강타는, 그를 당신의 임재로 두르고 있는 구주께로 떨어지게 된다. 

그에게 닥치는 것은 무엇이나 그리스도를 통하여 오게 된다. 

그리스도께서 그의 방벽이 되시므로, 그는 악을 대항할 필요가 없다. 

주님께서 허락하시는 것 외에는 아무것도 그를 건드릴 것이 없다. 

그리고 주께서 허락하시는 것은 “모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이루”(로마서 8장 28절)게 된다.
