Not to Ask—“Are They Worthy?”

“그들이 가치있는가?” 묻지 말라

 

However low, however fallen, however dishonored and debased others may be,

we are not to despise them and pass them by with indifference;

but we should consider the fact that Christ has died for them....

Christ longs to reshape the marred human character,

to restore the moral image of God in men.

 

사람이 아무리 미천하고 타락하고 몰염치하고 인격이 낮다 할지라도

우리는 그들을 멸시하거나 냉정하게 지나쳐 버리지 말아야 한다.

우리는 그리스도께서 그들을 위하여 돌아가셨다는 사실을 생각해야 한다. …

그리스도께서는 훼손된 인간의 성품을 다시 형성하여

사람 안에 하나님의 도덕적 형상을 회복시켜 주시고자 갈망하신다.Every soul is the object of the loving interest of Him who gave His life

that He might bring men back to God.

This earnest, persevering interest expressed by our heavenly Father teaches us

that the helpless and outcast are not to be passed by indifferently.

They are the Lord’s by creation and by redemption.

 

If we were left to ourselves to judge,

we would regard many who are degraded as hopeless.

 

But the Lord sees the value of the silver in them.

Though they do not look for help, He regards them as precious.

The one who sees beneath the surface knows how to deal with human minds.

He knows how to bring men to repentance.

He knows that if they see themselves as sinners,

they will repent and be converted to the truth.

This is the work we are to engage in.

 

각 영혼은,

사람들을 하나님께 돌아가게 하고자 당신의 생명을 주신 그분의 부드러운 관심의 대상이다.

우리 하늘 아버지께서 나타내신 열렬하고 꾸준한 이 관심은

가련하고 버림 받은 자들을 무관심하게 지나쳐 버리지 말아야 할 것을 우리에게 가르쳐 준다.

그들은 창조와 구속으로 주님의 것이 되었다.

 

만일 우리의 판단대로 버려둔다면,

우리는 타락한 많은 사람들을 희망이 없는 사람으로 여길 것이다.

 

그러나 주님은 그들 안에서 은전의 가치를 보신다.

비록 그들이 도움을 바라지 않을지라도 그분은 그들을 귀중하게 여기신다.

나타난 것만을 보지 않는 사람은 인간의 마음을 다루는 법을 안다.

그는 사람들을 회개하도록 지도하는 법을 안다.

그는 그들이 스스로가 죄인임을 알게 된다면 회개하여 진리로 돌아올 것을 안다.

이것이 우리가 해야 할 일이다.

To the appeal of the erring, the tempted, the wretched victims of want and sin,

the Christian does not ask, Are they worthy? but, How can I benefit them?

In the most wretched, the most debased,

he sees souls whom Christ died to save,

and for whom God has given to His children the ministry of reconciliation.

 

실수한 자들, 시험받는 자들, 궁핍과 죄의 희생물이 된 가련한 자들을 도와 주라고 호소할

그리스도인은 그들이 도와 줄 가치가 있는 사람인지 묻지 말고

내가 어떻게 그들을 도와 줄 수 있을 것인지 자문하라.

그는 가장 비참하고 가장 타락한 사람들에게서, 그리스도께서 구원하기 위하여 돌아가시고,

하나님께서 그들을 위하여 당신의 자녀들에게 화목의 직책을 주신 영혼들을 보게 된다.
