무아(無我)의 봉사

 

Those who, so far as it is possible, engage in the work of doing good to others

by giving practical demonstration of their interest in them,

are not only relieving the ills of human life in helping them bear their burdens,

but are at the same time contributing largely to their own health of soul and body.

 

할 수 있는 대로 다른 사람들에 대한 관심을 실제로 표시하는 사람들은

그들을 도와 짐을 가볍게 해줌으로 인간 생애의 고통을 덜어줄 뿐만 아니라

동시에 그들 자신의 영혼과 육신의 건강을 크게 돕고 있는 것이다.

 

Doing good is a work that benefits both giver and receiver.

If you forget self in your interest for others, you gain a victory over your infirmities.

The satisfaction you will realize in doing good

will aid you greatly in the recovery of the healthy tone of the imagination.

 

선을 행하는 것은 그것을 베푸는 자나 받는 자 모두에게 유익을 끼치는 일이다.

만일 그대들이 다른 사람에 대한 관심 가운데서 자신을 잊어버린다면

그대들은 자신의 결함에 대한 승리를 얻는다.

그대들이 선을 행하는 데서 느끼는 만족감은

상상력을 건전한 상태로 회복하는 데 크게 도움이 될 것이다.

 

The pleasure of doing good animates the mind and vibrates through the whole body.

While the faces of benevolent men are lighted up with cheerfulness,

and their countenances express the moral elevation of the mind,

those of selfish, stingy men are dejected, cast down, and gloomy.

Their moral defects are seen in their countenances.

Selfishness and self-love stamp their own image upon the outward man.

 

선을 행하는 기쁨은 마음에 생기를 주고 전신을 통하여 약동한다.

인자한 사람들의 얼굴은 기쁨으로 빛나며 그들의 표정에는 높은 도의심이 나타나고 있지만

이기적이요 인색한 사람들의 얼굴은 기운이 없고, 낙담하고, 침울하게 보인다.

그들의 도덕적 결함이 그들의 표정에 나타난다.

이기심과 자기 사랑은 사람의 외모에 그 형상을 찍는다.

 

That person who is actuated by true disinterested benevolence

is a partaker of the divine nature,

having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust;

 

while the selfish and avaricious have cherished their selfishness

until it has withered their social sympathies,

and their countenances reflect the image of the fallen foe

rather than that of purity and holiness.

 

진정한 무아(無我)의 자비심으로 활동하는 사람들은 신의 성품에 참여한 자들이다.

그리고 정욕으로 말미암은 세상의 부패를 떠난 자들이다.

 

한편 이기적이요 욕심 많은 사람들은

그것이 그들의 사회적 동정심을 고갈시켜 버릴 때까지 이기심을 품어 왔으며

그들의 얼굴은 순결과 성스러움보다도 타락한 마귀의 형상을 반사하고 있다.
