A Song Learned amid the Shadows of Affliction

고통의 그늘 아래서 배우는 노래

In the full light of day, and in hearing of the music of other voices,

the caged bird will not sing the song that his master seeks to teach him.

He learns a snatch of this, a trill of that, but never a separate and entire melody.

 

밝은 대낮에, 그리고 다른 음성으로 된 노래들이 들려오는 동안에는

새장 안에 있는 새가 그의 주인이 가르쳐주고자 애쓰고 있는 노래를 부르지 않을 것이다.

그런 경우에 새는 노래의 한 절 한 절씩을 여기 저기에서 떼어내어

짤막짤막하게 부르는 흉내만을 낼지언정 결코 단독으로 완전한 곡조를 다 부르지는 않는다.

 

But the master covers the cage,

and places it where the bird will listen to the one song he is to sing.

In the dark, he tries and tries again to sing that song until it is learned,

and he breaks forth in perfect melody.

Then the bird is brought forth, and ever after he can sing that song in the light.

 

그러나 주인이 새장을 덮고

그 새가 하나의 노래만을 들을 수 있는 곳에 두면 그는 노래를 부르게 된다.

어두움 속에서 그는 되풀이해서 그 노래를 부르고자 노력한다.

그리하여 마침내 그는 그 노래를 배워 완전한 곡으로 부르게 된다.

그런 다음에 그 새를 밝은 곳으로 내어놓으면, 그는 거기에서 그 노래를 부를 수 있게 된다.

 

Thus God deals with His children.

He has a song to teach us,

and when we have learned it amid the shadows of affliction,

we can sing it ever afterward.

 

하나님께서는 그와 같이 당신의 백성을 취급하신다.

그분께서는 우리에게 가르치고자 하는 노래가 있다.

우리가 고통의 그늘 아래서 그것을 배우게 되면, 우리는 그 후에 언제나 그 노래를 부를 수 있다.
