희락의 기름으로 그 슬픔을 대신하며

주께서는

“무릇 시온에서 슬퍼하는 자에게 화관을 주어…그 재를 대신하며

희락의 기름으로 그 슬픔을 대신하며

찬송의 옷으로 그 근심을 대신하" 겠다고 약속하셨다.(사 61：3)

 

시련과 슬픔 가운데서 우는 자들에게도 또한 위로가 있다.

슬픔과 굴욕으로 말미암아 괴로워하는 것이 죄 가운데서 방종하는 것보다 낫다.

 

하나님께서 고난을 통하여 우리의 품성 안에 있는 악덕의 근거를 드러내시는 것은

우리가 그분의 은혜를 힘입어 우리의 결함을 극복하도록 하기 위함이다.

 

자신에 대해 알려지지 않았던 장(章)들이 우리 앞에 펼쳐지고,

우리가 하나님의 견책과 권고를 받아들일 것인지의 여부를 알기 위한 시험이 이르러 온다.

시련에 부닥쳤을 때에 초조해 하거나 불평하지 말아야 한다.

우리는 반항하거나 그리스도의 손에서 떠나게 될까봐 걱정해서는 안 된다.

우리는 하나님 앞에서 심령을 겸비해야 한다.

 

자신을 즐겁게 하는 견해로 사물을 보기 원하는 자에게는 주의 길이 분명하지 않다.

그 길은 인간의 성정으로 볼 때에 어둡고 기쁨이 없어 보인다.

그러나 하나님의 길은 자비의 길이요 그 결국은 구원이다.

 

엘리야는 광야에서, 충분히 살았으니 이제는 죽었으면 좋겠다고 기도하였을 때에

자기가 무엇을 행하고 있는지 알지 못하였다.

주께서는 긍휼이 많으사 엘리야의 말대로 하지 않으셨다.

아직도 엘리야가 해야 할 큰 일이 있었다.

그 일이 성취된 후 그는 광야에서 실망과 고독 속에서 죽을 것이 아니었다.

그는 죽음의 티끌 속에 묻힐 것이 아니라

하늘 병거들의 호위 속에 하늘의 보좌로 영광중에 승천할 것이었다.

 

하나님께서는 슬퍼하는 자들에게

 

“내가 그 일을 보았은즉 그를 고쳐줄 것이라

그로 인하여 그와 그의 슬퍼하는 자에게 위로를 다시 얻게 하리라”,

 

“내가 그 일을 보았은즉 그들의 슬픔을 돌이켜 즐겁게 하며

그들을 위로하여 근심한 후에 기쁨을 얻게 할 것임이니라”(사 57：18; 렘 31：13)고 말씀하신다.

 

 

To Give the Oil of Joy for Mourning

 

“Unto them that mourn in Zion,” He has appointed to give “beauty for ashes,

the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.” Isaiah 61:3.

 

And for those also who mourn in trial and sorrow there is comfort.

The bitterness of grief and humiliation is better than the indulgences of sin.

 

Through affliction God reveals to us the plague spots in our characters,

that by His grace we may overcome our faults.

 

Unknown chapters in regard to ourselves are opened to us, and the test comes,

whether we will accept the reproof and the counsel of God.

When brought into trial, we are not to fret and complain.

We should not rebel, or worry ourselves out of the hand of Christ.

We are to humble the soul before God.

 

The ways of the Lord are obscure to him

who desires to see things in a light pleasing to himself.

They appear dark and joyless to our human nature.

But God’s ways are ways of mercy and the end is salvation.

 

Elijah knew not what he was doing when in the desert he said that he had had enough

of life, and prayed that he might die.

The Lord in His mercy did not take him at his word.

There was yet a great work for Elijah to do; and when his work was done, he was not to perish in discouragement and solitude in the wilderness.

Not for him the descent into the dust of death, but the ascent in glory,

with the convoy of celestial chariots, to the throne on high.

 

God’s word for the sorrowing is,

“I have seen his ways, and will heal him:

I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners.”

 

“I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them,

and make them rejoice from their sorrow.” Isaiah 57:18; Jeremiah 31:13.
