이성을 대신하는 감정

 

성화되었다고 공언하는 대부분의 사람들은 마음 가운데 역사하는 은혜에 대하여 전혀 무지하다.

시험해 보면 그들은 독선적인 바리새인들과 같다는 사실이 드러난다.

그들은 남의 말은 들으려 하지 않을 것이다.

그들은 이성과 판단을 제쳐놓고, 그들이 한때 경험하였던 감정에 기초를 두어

그들이 성화되었다고 주장하면서 자신의 감정에 전적으로 의존한다.

그들은 자기가 성결하다는 고집 센 주장을 역설하는 데 완강하고 괴퍅하다.

그러나 이와 같이 말은 많이 하면서 그 증거가 되는 귀중한 열매는 맺지 아니한다.

이 성화되었다고 공언하는 자들은 저희의 가식으로 자신의 영혼을 속이고 있을 뿐만 아니라

하나님의 뜻을 따르기를 갈망하는 많은 사람들을 곁길로 인도하는 감화를 끼치고 있다.

그들이 “하나님께서 나를 인도하신다! 가르치신다! 나는 죄없이 살고 있다!”고

거듭거듭 되풀이하는 말을 들을 수 있다.

이런 정신을 가진 자들과 접촉하게 되는 많은 사람들은

그들이 이해할 수 없는 암담하고 신비적인 어떤 것에 부닥치게 된다.

그러나 그것은 유일하신 참 모본이신 그리스도와는 전혀 같지 아니한 것이다.

 

성경상 성화는 강렬한 감정이 아니다. 많은 사람들이 여기서 오류에 빠진다.

그들은 감정을 척도로 삼는다. 행복감을 느끼거나 감정이 고조될 때 그들은 성화되었다고 주장한다. 행복감 혹은 우울감은 사람이 성화되었다거나 성화되지 않았다는 증거가 되지 않는다.

즉각적인 성화란 있을 수 없다. 참된 성화란 생명이 유지되는 한 계속되는 매일 매일의 과업이다.

매일의 유혹과 더불어 싸우며 자신의 죄된 성향을 극복하고 또 마음과 생활의 성결을 구하는 자들은 성결하다고 하는 자만스러운 주장을 하지 않는다.

그들은 의에 대해 주리고 목말라 하고 있다.

죄는 그들에게 몹시 죄된 것으로 보인다.

 

Substituting Feeling for Reason

Many who profess sanctification are entirely ignorant of the work of grace upon the heart. When proved and tested, they are found to be like the self-righteous Pharisee. They will bear no contradiction. They lay aside reason and judgment, and depend wholly upon their feelings, basing their claims to sanctification upon emotions which they have at some time experienced. They are stubborn and perverse in urging their tenacious claims of holiness, giving many words, but bearing no precious fruit as proof. These professedly sanctified persons are not only deluding their own souls by their pretensions, but are exerting an influence to lead astray many who earnestly desire to conform to the will of God. They may be heard to reiterate again and again, “God leads me! God teaches me! I am living without sin!” Many who come in contact with this spirit encounter a dark, mysterious something which they cannot comprehend. But it is that which is altogether unlike Christ, the only true pattern.

Bible sanctification does not consist in strong emotion. Here is where many are led into error. They make feelings their criterion. When they feel elated or happy, they claim that they are sanctified. Happy feelings or the absence of joy is no evidence that a person is or is not sanctified. There is no such thing as instantaneous sanctification. True sanctification is a daily work, continuing as long as life shall last. Those who are battling with daily temptations, overcoming their own sinful tendencies, and seeking for holiness of heart and life, make no boastful claims of holiness. They are hungering and thirsting for righteousness. Sin appears to them exceedingly sinful. – Sanctified Life, 9-10.
