우리는 낙담할 필요가 없다

 

 

하나님의 백성들이 그들을 취급하시는 하나님의 길을 깨닫고 그분의 가르침을 받아들인다면

그들은 그들이 걸어갈 곧은 길과 그들을 흑암과 낙망을 통하여 인도할 빛을 발견할 것이다.

 

다윗은 그를 취급하시는 하나님의 섭리에서 지혜를 배우고 지존자의 징계 아래 겸손히 무릎을 꿇었다. 그의 참된 상태에 대한 선지자 나단의 충실한 묘사는

다윗에게 자신의 죄를 깨닫게 하고, 그 죄를 버리게 했다.

그는 온유하게 충고를 받아들이고 하나님 앞에 자신을 낮추었다.

“여호와의 율법은 완전하여 영혼을 소성케” 한다고 그는 부르짖는다. (시 19:7)

 

회개하는 죄인들은 그들의 범법이 지적되고 그들의 위험에 대한 경고가 주어질 때

낙망할 필요가 없다. 그들을 위한 이와 같은 노력은

하나님께서 그들을 얼마나 사랑하시며 그들을 구하기를 원하시는지 보여 준다.

그들은 영생을 유업으로 얻기 위하여 그분의 충고와 뜻을 따르기만 하면 된다.

 

하나님께서는 잘못을 범한 당신의 백성들이 거룩한 진리의 빛으로

그들의 죄의 흉악성을 볼 수 있도록 그들의 죄악을 그들 앞에 제시해 주신다.

그런 후에 그 죄를 영원히 버리는 것은 그들의 의무이다.

 

부조들의 시대, 다윗의 시대, 선지자와 사도 시대와 마찬가지로

오늘날도 하나님은 죄에서 구원하기에 강력하시다.

하나님께서 그분의 백성들을 죄에서 구원해 내신 사실이,

기록된 거룩한 역사에서 허다한 경우들을 볼 때,

오늘날 그리스도인들은 거룩한 가르침을 받고자 갈급해야 하며,

엄밀한 심판의 조사를 견딜 품성을 완성하기 위하여 열성을 내야 한다.

 

성경의 역사는 낙심하는 마음을 하나님의 자비의 소망으로 붙들어 준다.

다른 사람들도 우리와 같은 실망 가운데 투쟁하고, 우리가 넘어진 것처럼 유혹에 넘어졌으나,

그들의 위치를 회복하고 하나님의 축복을 받은 것을 볼 때, 우리는 낙담할 필요가 없다.

영감의 말씀은 잘못한 영혼을 위로하고 격려한다.

비록 부조들과 사도들이 인간적 약점에 굴복했으나 믿음으로 좋은 평판을 얻었고,

주님의 능력으로 그들의 싸움을 싸우고 영광스럽게 승리하였다.

그와 같이 우리도 속죄의 희생의 공로를 의지하고 예수님의 이름으로 승리자가 될 수 있다.

 

아담의 시대로부터 오늘날에 이르기까지 인간은 역시 인간이며,

하나님의 사랑은 각 세대를 통하여 비할 데 없이 크다.

 

We Need Not Despair

If God’s people would recognize His dealings with them and accept His teachings, they would find a straight path for their feet and a light to guide them through darkness and discouragement. David learned wisdom from God’s dealings with him and bowed in humility beneath the chastisement of the Most High. The faithful portrayal of his true state by the prophet Nathan made David acquainted with his own sins and aided him to put them away. He accepted counsel meekly and humiliated himself before God. “The law of the Lord,” he exclaims, “is perfect, converting the soul.”

Repentant sinners have no cause to despair because they are reminded of their transgressions and warned of their danger. These very efforts in their behalf show how much God loves them and desires to save them. They have only to follow His counsel and do His will, to inherit eternal life. God sets the sins of His erring people before them, that they may behold them in all their enormity under the light of divine truth. It is then their duty to renounce them forever.

God is as powerful to save from sin today as He was in the times of the patriarchs, of David, and of the prophets and apostles. The multitude of cases recorded in sacred history where God has delivered His people from their own iniquities should make the Christian of this time eager to receive divine instruction and zealous to perfect a character that will bear the close inspection of the judgment.

Bible history stays the fainting heart with the hope of God’s mercy. We need not despair when we see that others have struggled through discouragements like our own, have fallen into temptations even as we have done, and yet have recovered their ground and been blessed of God. The words of inspiration comfort and cheer the erring soul. Although the patriarchs and apostles were subject to human frailties, yet through faith they obtained a good report, fought their battles in the strength of the Lord, and conquered gloriously. Thus may we trust in the virtue of the atoning sacrifice and be overcomers in the name of Jesus. Humanity is humanity the world over from the time of Adam down to the present generation, and the love of God through all ages is without a parallel. - Testimonies for the Church 4, 14-5.
