우리가 필요로 하는 것은 정신적 계발임

 

정신적 계발은 한 백성으로서 우리가 필요로 하는 것이다.

그 시대의 요구를 충족시키려면 우리가 갖지 않으면 안 되는 그것이다.

가난, 비천한 태생 그리고 불리한 환경이 마음의 계발을 방해하도록 할 필요가 없다.

정신적 기능들은 의지의 통제 아래 붙잡아 두어야 하며,

마음은 방황하거나 어떤 것도 철저하게 다룸없이

동시에 여러 다양한 주제들을 생각함으로서 혼란케 되도록 허락해서는 안 된다.

 

모든 연구에서 난제들에 부닥칠 것이지만, 결코 낙담해서 그치지 말라. 상고하고 연구하고 기도하라. 모든 어려움을 당당하게 그리고 원기 완성하게 맞서라.

의지의 힘과 인내의 미덕을 불러일으켜 도움을 얻으라.

그런 다음 진리의 보석이 그대 앞에 명백하게 그리고 아름답게,

그리고 그것을 발견하는 데 겪었던 어려움들로 인하여 더욱더 귀중하게 그대 앞에 높여 질 때까지

열렬하게 파라.

 

그러므로 한 가지 요점을 끊임없이 깊이 생각하면서 마음의 모든 정력을 그것에 집중하고

끊임없이 다른 사람들이 그것에 관심을 가질 것을 촉구하지 말고

다른 주제를 택하여 조심스럽게 그것을 조사하라.

그와 같이하여, 그대가 깨달을 수 있도록 신비가 하나씩 하나씩 공개될 것이다.

 

이런 방법을 통해서 두 가지 귀중한 승리를 얻을 것이다.

그대는 유용한 지식을 얻었을 뿐 아니라 마음을 활용함으로써 정신적 능력과 힘을 증가시켰다.

한 가지 신비를 풀어 주는 열쇠는

지금까지 발견되지 않았던 귀중한 지식의 보석들도 드러내 줄 것이다.

 

 

Mental Culture Is What We Need

Mental culture is what we as a people need and what we must have in order to meet the demands of the time. Poverty, humble origin, and unfavorable surroundings need not prevent the cultivation of the mind. The mental faculties must be kept under the control of the will and the mind not allowed to wander or become distracted with a variety of subjects at a time, being thorough in none.

Difficulties will be met in all studies, but never cease through discouragement.
