TO WHOM IT IS DUE

Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom...

My husband and I live in a rural area surrounded by farms where this slogan is popular: “If you ate a meal today, thank a farmer.” Farmers definitely deserve our gratitude. They do the hot, hard work of tilling soil, planting seeds, and harvesting the food that keeps us from starving to death. But every time I thank a farmer, I also try to remember to offer praise to God, for He is the one responsible for producing the food we eat. He gives light, sends rain, and creates the energy within the seed that gives it the strength to push through the soil and produce fruit. Although the earth and everything in it belong to God (Ps. 24:1), He has chosen humans to be its caretakers. We are responsible to use the earth’s resources as He would use them to do His work in the world (115:16). And just as we are stewards of God’s physical creation, we also are stewards of His design for society.   We do this by respecting those He has placed in authority, by paying taxes, by giving honor to those who have earned it, and by continuing to pay our debt of love (Rom. 13:7-8). But one thing we reserve for God: All praise and glory belong to Him, for He is the one who makes everything possible. (Ps. 96:8)   -Julie Ackerman Link

마땅히 받을 자에게

모든 자에게 줄 것을 주되 조세를 받을 자에게 조세를 바치고 관세를 받을 자에게 관세를 바치고 두려워할 자를 두려워하며 존경할 자를 존경하라   -로마서 13:7

나는 남편과 함께 농장으로 둘러싸인 시골에 살고 있습니다. 이곳에는 “오늘 밥을 먹게 되면 농부에게 감사하라.”라는 유명한 슬로건이 있습니다. 농부들은 마땅히 우리의 감사를 받아야 합니다. 그들은 우리가 굶어죽지 않도록 힘들게 땅을 갈고, 씨를 뿌리고, 수확을 합니다. 그러나 농부에게 감사할 때마다, 나는 우리가 먹는 양식을 생산할 수 있도록 주관하시는 하나님께 찬양을 드리는 것 역시 잊지 않으려고 노력합니다. 하나님은 빛을 주시고, 비를 내리시고, 씨앗이 흙을 뚫고 나와 열매를 맺을 수 있는 힘을 갖도록 그 안에 에너지를 넣어주십니다. 땅과 그 위에 있는 모든 것이 하나님의 것이라도(시 24:1), 하나님은 사람으로 하여금 이들을 관리하게 하셨습니다. 이 땅에서 하나님의 일을 하기 위해 하나님이 그러셨던 것처럼 우리도 땅의 자원들을 사용해야 할 책임이 있습니다(시 115:16). 그리고 우리가 하나님의 창조물의 관리자인 것처럼, 우리는 하나님이 기획하신 인간사회의 관리자이기도 합니다.   우리는 하나님께서 권위를 부여하신 이들에게 경의를 표하고, 세금을 내며, 존경할 자를 존경하고, 사랑의 빚을 계속 갚아나감으로써(롬 13:7-8) 그 일을 합니다. 그러나 한 가지 하나님께만 드려야 할 것이 있습니다. 모든 것을 가능케 하시는 분은 하나님이시기에 모든 찬양과 영광은 오직 하나님께만 드려져야 합니다(시 96:8).

하나님의 헤아릴 수 없는 뜻들은 우리의 무한한 찬양을 받으시기에
