OUR FEARLESS CHAMPION

Why are you fearful? -Matthew 8:26

Falling asleep was a challenging event during my childhood. No sooner had my parents turned out the lights than the crumpled clothes I had thrown on the chair would take on the form of a fiery dragon and the thoughts of something living under my bed put me into a panic that made sleep impossible. I’ve come to realize that the immobilizing power of fear is not just a childhood experience. Fear keeps us from forgiving, taking a stand at the office, giving our resources to God’s kingdom, or saying no when all our friends are saying yes. Left to ourselves, we are up against a lot of fiery dragons in our lives. In the story of the disciples in the storm-tossed boat, I’m struck by the fact that the only one who was not afraid was Jesus. He was not afraid of the storm, nor was He afraid of a crazy man in a graveyard or of the legion of demons that possessed him (Matt. 8:23-34). In the face of fear, we need to hear Jesus ask, “Why are you fearful?” (v.26) and be reminded that He will never leave us nor forsake us (Heb. 13:5-6). There is nothing that He can’t overcome and therefore nothing for Him to fear. So, next time you’re haunted by your fears, remember that you can rely on Jesus, our fearless Champion!   -Joe Stowell

Lord, thank You for the reminder that You will never leave us nor forsake us. When I am afraid, I know that I can rely on Your presence and power to calm my heart and overcome my fears.

어찌하여 무서워하느냐-마태복음 8:26

어렸을 때 나는 잠들기가 어려웠습니다. 부모님이 전등을 끄자마자 의자 위에 벗어던진 옷들이 불타는 용 같은 형체를 취하고, 침대 밑에 살아 있는 무엇인가가 있다는 생각에 무서워서 잠을 잘 수가 없었습니다. 그런데 우리를 꼼짝 못하게 하는 두려움은 어린 시절에만 겪는 것이 아니라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 두려움은 용서를 제대로 하지 못하게 만들고, 직장에서 나의 주장을 당당하게 펴지 못하게 하며, 하나님께 우리의 가진 것을 드리지 못하게 하고, 모든 사람들이 ‘예’라고 할 때, ‘아니요’라고 말할 수 없게 만듭니다. 우리는 홀로 남겨진 채 수많은 용들과 마주치며 살아갑니다. 풍랑 속에 요동치는 배 안에 있던 제자들의 이야기에서, 두려워하지 않았던 분은 오직 예수님뿐이었다는 사실에 나는 매료되었습니다. 예수님은 풍랑을 두려워하지 않았을 뿐만 아니라, 무덤가에 있던 미친 사람이나 그에게 들어갔던 귀신들도 두려워하지 않았습니다 (마 8:23-34). 두려움에 직면했을 때, “어찌하여 무서워하느냐”(26절)라고 물으신 예수님의 음성을 들어야 합니다. 그리고 주님은 결코 우리를 떠나지도, 버리지도 않으신다는 것을 기억해야 합니다(히 13:5-6). 예수님은 능히 하지 못할 일이 없으시기에 두려워하실 것도 없으십니다. 그래서 다음에 당신이 두려움에 사로잡히게 된다면, 두려움을 모르시는 승리자이신 예수님에게 의지하십시오!

주님, 우리를 결코 떠나지도 버리지도 않으심을 상기시켜 주셔서 감사합니다. 제가 두려울 때 주님의 임재와 주님의 능력을 의지하여 제 마음을 진정시키고 두려움을 극복할 수 있음을 압니다.

두려울 때면, 두려움 없는 승리자 예수님을 큰 소리로 부르라.
