VICTORY OVER DEATH!

The hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth. -John 5:28-29

An ancient painting I saw recently made a deep impression on me. Its title, Anastasis, means “resurrection,” and it depicts the triumph of Christ’s victory over death in a stunning way. The Lord Jesus, newly emerged from the tomb, is pulling Adam and Eve out of their coffins to eternal life. What is so amazing about this artwork is the way it shows how spiritual and physical death, the result of the fall, were dramatically reversed by the risen Christ. Prior to His death on the cross, the Lord Jesus predicted a future day when He will call believers into a new and glorified existence: “The hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth” (John 5:28-29). Because of Christ’s victory over death, the grave is not final. We naturally will feel sorrow and grief when those we love die and we are separated from them in this life. But the believer does not grieve as one who has no hope (1 Thess. 4:13). The witness of Jesus’ resurrection is that all Christians will one day be taken from their graves to be clothed with glorified resurrection bodies (1 Cor. 15:42-44). And so “we shall always be with the Lord” (1 Thess. 4:17). -Dennis Fisher

Dear Lord, thank You for sacrificing Your life for our sins so that we might live. We’re thankful that because You died and rose again, we can have assurance that one day we’ll be with You in a place of no more death.

Because Christ is alive, we too shall live.

무덤 속에 있는 자가 다 그의 음성을 들을 때가 오나니…나오리라- 요한복음 5:28-29

최근에 보았던 오래된 그림 한 폭이 나에게 깊은 인상을 남겼습니다. “부활”이라는 뜻을 가진 ‘아나스타시스’라는 제목의 그 그림은 죽음을 이기신 그리스도의 승리를 놀라운 방법으로 묘사하고 있습니다. 무덤에서 새로 일어나신 주 예수님이 아담과 하와를 그들의 관으로부터 끌어내어 영원한 생명으로 이끌고 계십니다. 이 예술작품이 그토록 놀라운 것은 타락의 결과인 영적 죽음과 육체적 죽음이 어떻게 해서 다시 살아나신 그리스도에 의해 극적으로 역전되었는지를 표현하고 있는 그 방식에 있습니다. 십자가에서의 죽음에 앞서, 주 예수님은 믿는 자들을 새롭고 영광된 존재로 부르실 미래의 날에 대해 미리 말씀하셨습니다. “무덤 속에 있는 자가 다 그의 음성을 들을 때가 오나니…나오리라”(요 5:28-29). 그리스도께서 죽음을 이기셨기 때문에 무덤이 끝이 아닙니다. 이 세상에서 사랑하는 사람들과 헤어질 때 우리는 자연스럽게 애통함과 슬픔을 느끼게 됩니다. 하지만 믿는 사람은 소망 없는 다른 사람과 같이 슬퍼하지 않습니다(살전 4:13). 예수님의 부활은 언젠가 모든 그리스도인들이 무덤으로부터 나와 영광스러운 부활의 몸을 입게 될 것을 증거해줍니다(고전 15:42-44). 그리고 “우리가 항상 주와 함께 있을”(살전 4:17) 것입니다.

사랑하는 주님, 저희의 죄 때문에 주님이 희생하심으로 저희가 살게 해주시니 감사합니다. 주님이 죽으시고 다시 사심으로 저희가 언젠가는 더 이상 죽음이 없는 곳에서 주님과 함께 있게 되리라는 확신을 주시니 감사합니다.

예수님이 살아 계시므로 우리도 살 것이다.
