| He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. -Isaiah 40:29 |
| In late October 2012, a hurricanespawned superstorm struck the heavily populated northeastern US, leaving massive flooding and destruction in its wake. During the storm, more than 8 million customers lost electricity. Power outages alone caused shortages of food, fuel, and water, along with the chaos of gridlocked transportation. The howling winds and surging waters left many neighborhoods crushed, flooded, and choked with mountains of sand. Media coverage of the event reported: “Millions Without Power.” Like a storm of nature, a personal tragedy can often leave us feeling powerless and in the dark. During such times, God’s Word assures us of His help: “He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength” (Isa. 40:29). At our lowest point, drained of emotional resources, we can place our hope in the Lord and fi-nd our strength in Him. He promises us that, for each new day, “Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint” (v.31). God is our spiritual power source in every storm of life. -David McCasland |

| 피곤한 자에게는 능력을 주시며 무능한 자에게는 힘을 더하시나니-이사야 40:29 |
| 2012년 10월 하순경, 허리케인이 몰고 온 초대형 폭풍이 인구밀도가 높은 미국 동북부 지역을 휩쓸었고 폭풍이 지나간 자리에는 엄청난 홍수와 파괴를 남겨 놓았습니다. 그 태풍이 지나가는 동안 8 백만 이상의 주민이 정전사태를 겪었습니다. 정전이 되자 교통마비로 인한 혼란은 물론, 식료품, 휘발유, 음료수 부족사태가 발생했습니다. 거센 바람과 밀어닥치는 파도로 인해 많은 동네가 파괴되고, 침수되고, 산같이 쌓인 모래로 막혀버렸습니다. 재난을 취재하는 언론에서는 “수백만 명이 전기 없이” 지낸다고 보도했습니다. 자연의 폭풍처럼, 개인적인 비극도 우리에게 무력감과 어둠 속에 갇힌 느낌을 가져다줍니다. 하지만 그럴 때에 성경말씀은 하나님이 우리를 도우신다는 확신을 갖게 합니다. “피곤한 자에게는 능력을 주시며 무능한 자에게는 힘을 더하시나니”(사 40:29). 우리가 감정적으로 고갈되어 나락에 떨어졌을 때, 우리는 희망을 주님 안에 두고 주님 안에서 힘을 얻을 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리에게 날마다 “오직 여호와를 앙망하는 자는 새 힘을 얻으리니 독수리의 날개 치며 올라감 같을 것이요 달음박질하여도 곤비하지 아니하겠고 걸어가도 피곤하지 아니하리로다”(31절)라고 약속해주십니다. 하나님은 인생에 폭풍이 닥칠 때마다 우리에게 영적인 힘의 원천이 되십니다. |
