| MISPLACED LOVE |
| Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. -Psalm 115:4 |
| Martin Lindstrom, an author and speaker, thinks that cellphones have become akin to a best friend for many owners. Lindstrom’s experiment using an MRI helped him discover why. When the subjects saw or heard their phone ringing, their brains fired off neurons in the area associated with feelings of love and compassion. Lindstrom said, “It was as if they were in the presence of a girlfriend, boyfriend, or family member.” Many things vie for our affection and time and attention, and it seems we’re always needing to evaluate where we’re focusing our lives. Joshua told the people of Israel that they were to give their affection and worship to God alone (Josh. 24:14). This was significant in contrast to the idols worshiped by the nations around them. These idols were made of metal and were only the work of men’s hands (Ps. 115:4). They were totally powerless compared to the Lord. Therefore, God’s people were exhorted to fi-nd their security in Him and not in other gods (Judg. 10:13-16). Jesus reiterated this in His discussion of the commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matt. 22:37). The Lord alone is our help and shield (Ps. 115:9). May we reserve our worship for Him. -Marvin Williams |

| 책도 쓰며 강연도 하는 마틴 린스트롬은 휴대전화기가 사람들에게 제일 좋은 친구처럼 되었다고 믿고 있습니다. 그는 자기공명영상을 이용한 실험을 통해 그 이유를 발견했습니다. 실험에 참가한 사람들이 휴대전화기를 보거나 벨 소리를 들었을 때, 그들의 뇌는 사랑의 감정과 애착을 느끼게 하는 신경세포를 자극하였습니다. “그들은 마치 사랑하는 애인이나 가족들과 함께 있는 것처럼 보였다.”라고 린스트롬은 말했습니다. 많은 일들이 우리의 애정과 시간과 관심을 차지하기 위해 서로 다투고 있어서, 우리가 삶의 초점을 어디에 맞추고 있는지 항상 평가해야 할 필요가 있어 보입니다. 여호수아는 이스라엘 백성들을 향해 그들의 사랑과 경배를 오직 여호와 하나님께만 드리라고 말했습니다(수 24:14). 이 말은 그들 주변 국가들의 우상숭배와 비교해볼 때 중요한 의미가 있었습니다. 단지 사람이 손으로 만든 것에 지나지 않았던 이 금속 우상들은(시 115:4) 하나님과 비교하면 완전히 무능력한 존재였습니다. 그러므로 하나님의 백성들은 다른 신들이 아니라 하나님 안에서 안전을 찾아야 한다고 권고 받았습니다(삿 10:13-16). 예수님도 “네 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 주 너의 하나님을 사랑하라”(마 22:37)라고 명하시며 이 점을 다시 반복해주셨습니다. 하나님만이 우리의 도움이시요 방패이십니다(시 115:9). 하나님께만 경배 드리도록 합시다. |
