가장 큰 낙담의 순간은 하나님의 도움이 가장 가까이에 있는 때

“나사로가 죽었느니라”고 제자들에게 말할 때에 그분은 말할 수 없는 고통과 괴로움을 맛보셨다.

그러나 그리스도께서는 베다니에 있는 사랑하는 그들만을 생각하지는 않으셨다.

그분은 제자들의 교육도 생각하셔야 했다.

 

제자들은 아버지의 축복이 모든 사람을 포용할 수 있도록 그분의 대리자로서 세상에 보내질 것이었다. 그들을 위하여 그분은 나사로를 죽도록 허락하셨다.

 

만일 예수께서 나사로를 병에서 회복시키셨더라면

예수님의 신적인 신분을 가장 명확하게 증거하는 그 이적은 행하실 수 없었을 것이다.

만일 그리스도께서 그 병실에 계셨더라면 사단이 그를 이길 힘이 없었을 것이므로

나사로는 죽지 않았을 것이다.

생명의 시여자 앞에서 죽음은 그 창을 나사로에게 던지지 못했을 것이다.

 

그러므로 그리스도께서는 멀리 떠나 계셨다.

원수가 그의 능력을 행사할 수 있도록 허락하신 것은

그분이 정복한 원수로부터 나사로를 다시 찾아오시기 위함이었다.

그분은 나사로가 죽음의 지배 아래에 들어가도록 허락하셨으며,

고통 받는 누이들은 저희 오빠가 무덤에 들어가는 것을 보았다.

그리스도께서는 그들이 오라비의 죽은 얼굴을 바라볼 때에

구주에 대한 믿음이 격렬하게 시험받을 것을 아셨다.

 

그러나 그분께서는 그들이 겪는 투쟁으로 말미암아

저희 믿음이 더욱 큰 능력으로 빛나게 될 것을 아셨다.

그분께서는 그들이 당한 모든 슬픔의 고통을 경험하셨다.

그분께서 지체하신 것은 그들을 덜 사랑하기 때문이 아니었다.

그분께서는 그들과 나사로와 자신과 제자들을 위하여 승리를 얻어야 한다는 것을 아셨다.

 

“너희를 위하여”, “너희로 믿게 하려 함이라.”

하나님의 인도하시는 손길이 미치고 있음을 느끼려고 노력하는 모든 사람들에게

가장 큰 낙담의 순간은 바로 하나님의 도움이 가장 가까이에 있는 때이다.

그들은 저희 길의 어두운 부분을 감사함으로 돌아볼 것이다.

 

“주께서 경건한 자는 시험에서”(벧후 2：9) 어떻게 건지실 줄을 아신다.

모든 시험과 시련을 통하여 그들을 더욱 굳건한 믿음과 더욱 풍성한 사람으로 만들어 내실 것이다.

The Moment of Greatest Discouragement is The Time When Divine Help is Nearest

He felt every pang of anguish, as He said to His disciples, "Lazarus is dead." But Christ had not only the loved ones at Bethany to think of; He had the training of His disciples to consider. They were to be His representatives to the world, that the Father's blessing might embrace all. For their sake He permitted Lazarus to die. Had He restored him from illness to health, the miracle that is the most positive evidence of His divine character, would not have been performed.

Had Christ been in the sickroom, Lazarus would not have died; for Satan would have had no power over him. Death could not have aimed his dart at Lazarus in the presence of the Life-giver. Therefore Christ remained away. He suffered the enemy to exercise his power, that He might drive him back, a conquered foe. He permitted Lazarus to pass under the dominion of death; and the suffering sisters saw their brother laid in the grave. Christ knew that as they looked on the dead face of their brother their faith in their Redeemer would be severely tried. But He knew that because of the struggle through which they were now passing their faith would shine forth with far greater power. He suffered every pang of sorrow that they endured. He loved them no less because He tarried; but He knew that for them, for Lazarus, for Himself, and for His disciples, a victory was to be gained.

"For your sakes," "to the intent ye may believe." To all who are reaching out to feel the guiding hand of God, the moment of greatest discouragement is the time when divine help is nearest. They will look back with thankfulness upon the darkest part of their way. "The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly," 2 Peter 2:9. From every temptation and every trial He will bring them forth with firmer faith and a richer experience. – Desires of Ages, 528.
