거저 받았으니 거저 주라

이기심과 냉정한 형식주의는 사랑의 불길을 거의 꺼버렸으며 품성을 향기롭게 할 은혜를 쫓아 버렸다. 그분의 이름을 공언하는 사람들 중에, 그리스도인은 그리스도를 대표해야 한다는 사실을 잊어버리고 있는 사람들이 많다. 가정에서, 이웃 사이에서, 교회에서, 그리고 우리가 어디에 있든지 남의 유익을 위하여 실제적으로 자아를 희생하지 않는 한, 우리가 무엇을 공언하든지 간에 우리는 그리스도인이 아니다.

그리스도께서는 당신의 관심을 인간의 관심과 연결시키고 우리에게 인간을 구원하는 사업에 당신과 하나가 되라고 요청하신다. “너희가 거저 받았으니 거저 주라”(마 10：8)고 그분께서는 말씀하신다. 모든 악한 것들 중에 가장 큰 것이 죄이지만, 죄인을 동정하고 도와주는 일이 우리가 할 일이다. 과오를 범하고 수치심과 자신의 어리석음을 느끼는 사람이 많다. 그들은 격려의 말에 굶주리고 있다. 그들은 자신의 잘못과 과오를 바라보다가 마침내 거의 절망 직전까지 내몰린다. 우리는 이런 영혼들을 소홀히 해서는 안 된다. 우리가 그리스도인이라면, 우리의 도움이 가장 필요되는 바로 그 사람들을 될 수 있는 대로 멀리 피하여 다른 길로 지나가 버리지 않을 것이다. 우리는 병으로 인한 것이든 죄로 인한 것이든 곤경에 빠진 인간들을 볼 때 이것은 나와는 상관없는 일이다라고 결코 말하지 말 것이다. – 시대의 소망, 504.

 

 

 

Freely Received, Freely Give

 

Selfishness and cold formality have well-nigh extinguished the fire of love, and dispelled the graces that should make fragrant the character. Many who profess His name have lost sight of the fact that Christians are to represent Christ. Unless there is practical self-sacrifice for the good of others, in the family circle, in the neighborhood, in the church, and wherever we may be, then whatever our profession, we are not Christians.

Christ has linked His interest with that of humanity, and He asks us to become one with Him for the saving of humanity. "Freely ye have received," He says, "freely give." Matt. 10:8. Sin is the greatest of all evils, and it is ours to pity and help the sinner. There are many who err, and who feel their shame and their folly. They are hungry for words of encouragement. They look upon their mistakes and errors, until they are driven almost to desperation. These souls we are not to neglect. If we are Christians, we shall not pass by on the other side, keeping as far as possible from the very ones who most need our help. When we see human beings in distress, whether through affliction or through sin, we shall never say, This does not concern me. – Desires of Ages, 504.
