피로와 지연(遲延)과 주림에 견딜 수 있는 믿음

 

우리 앞에 있는 고난과 고통의 시기는 우리에게 피로와 지연(遲延)과 주림에 견딜 수 있는 믿음, 곧 격렬하게 시련을 받을지라도 쇠약해지지 아니할 믿음이 필요하다. 그때를 위하여 준비할 수 있는 은혜의 시기가 모든 사람들에게 주어져 있다. 야곱은 끈기 있고 확고하였기 때문에 승리하였다. 그의 승리는 줄기찬 기도의 능력이 어떤 것임을 보여 주는 하나의 실증이다. 야곱처럼 하나님의 약속을 굳게 잡고 열렬하고 꾸준하게 나아가는 모든 사람은 그가 성공한 것처럼 성공할 것이다. 자아를 기꺼이 부인하지 않고, 하나님 앞에서 고민하며 하나님의 축복을 받고자 꾸준하고 열렬하게 기도하기를 원치 않는 자들은 그것을 얻지 못할 것이다. 하나님과 기도로 씨름하는 것이 무엇임을 깨닫고 있는 자들이 얼마나 적은가! 모든 힘이 다할 때까지 강렬한 열망을 가지고 온 심령을 다 기울여 하나님을 찾는 자들이 얼마나 적은가. 말로 표현할 수 없는 절망의 물결이 간구하는 자들 위에 밀려올 때 확고한 믿음으로 하나님의 약속을 굳게 붙잡는 자들이 어찌 그리 적은가!

오늘날 믿음을 조금밖에 활용하지 않는 자들은 사단의 기만적 권세와 양심을 억압하는 법령에 굴복될 위험이 가장 크다. 비록 그들이 그 시련을 견디어 낼지라도 그들은 환난의 때에 더욱 심한 난관과 고통 속에 빠지게 될 것이다. 왜냐하면 그들은 평소에 하나님을 신뢰하는 습관을 기르지 아니하였기 때문이다. 그들은 그들이 등한히 한 믿음의 교훈을 무서운 절망 가운데서 배우지 않으면 안 될 것이다.

우리는 오늘날 주님의 약속을 실증함으로써 하나님과 친숙해져야 한다. 천사들은 열렬하고 진실한 모든 기도를 기록한다. 우리는 하나님과 나누는 교통을 등한히 하기보다 차라리 이기적 만족을 버려야 한다. 하나님께서 인정하시는 극심한 빈궁과 가장 큰 극기는 그분께서 인정하지 않으시는 부귀와 명예와 안일과 우정보다 더 낫다. 우리는 기도하는 시간을 가져야 할 것이다. 만일 우리가 세상일에 몰두당하도록 우리의 마음을 허용하면 하나님께서는 우리의 우상이 되어 있는 재산과 가옥과 비옥한 토지를 우리에게서 빼앗아 가심으로써 우리에게 기도할 시간을 주실지도 모른다. – 각 시대의 대쟁투, 621-2.

 

A Faith That Can Endure Weariness, Delay, and Hunger

 

The season of distress and anguish before us will require a faith that can endure weariness, delay, and hunger--a faith that will not faint though severely tried. The period of probation is granted to all to prepare for that time. Jacob prevailed because he was persevering and determined. His victory is an evidence of the power of importunate prayer. All who will lay hold of God's promises, as he did, and be as earnest and persevering as he was, will succeed as he succeeded. Those who are unwilling to deny self, to agonize before God, to pray long and earnestly for His blessing, will not obtain it. Wrestling with God--how few know what it is! How few have ever had their souls drawn out after God with intensity of desire until every power is on the stretch. When waves of despair which no language can express sweep over the suppliant, how few cling with unyielding faith to the promises of God.

Those who exercise but little faith now, are in the greatest danger of falling under the power of satanic delusions and the decree to compel the conscience. And even if they endure the test they will be plunged into deeper distress and anguish in the time of trouble, because they have never made it a habit to trust in God. The lessons of faith which they have neglected they will be forced to learn under a terrible pressure of discouragement.

We should now acquaint ourselves with God by proving His promises. Angels record every prayer that is earnest and sincere. We should rather dispense with selfish gratifications than neglect communion with God. The deepest poverty, the greatest self-denial, with His approval, is better than riches, honors, ease, and friendship without it. We must take time to pray. If we allow our minds to be absorbed by worldly interests, the Lord may give us time by removing from us our idols of gold, of houses, or of fertile lands. – The Great Controversy, 621-2.
