천연계 가운데서 그리스도를 보도록 아이들을 가르치라

부모들이여, 그대의 아이들을 교육시킬 때 하나님께서 천연계를 통해 주신 교훈들을 연구하라. 그대는 석죽(石竹)이나 장미나 백합을 기르고자 할 때 어떻게 하는가? 어떤 과정으로 모든 가지와 잎사귀를 매우 아름답게 번성하게 하고 균형 잡히고 사랑스럽게 자라게 하는지 정원사에게 물어 보라. 그는 이것은 거칠은 취급이나 격렬한 노력으로 된 것이 아니라고 말할 것이다. 그 까닭은, 그렇게 하면 연한 줄기들만 부러뜨릴 것이기 때문이다. 그것은 작은 주의들을 자주 반복함으로써 이루어진다. 그는 땅을 축축하게 하고 자라나는 식물들을 심한 바람과 작열하는 태양에서 보호하였으며, 하나님께서는 그것들이 자라나 아름다운 꽃이 피게 하셨다. 아이들을 다룰 때 정원사의 방법을 따르라. 부드럽게 손질하고 사랑으로 다스려 그들의 품성을 그리스도의 품성의 본을 따라 형성시키기 위해 노력하라.

하나님께 사랑을 표현하고 상호간에도 그렇게 하도록 권하라. 이 세상에 그토록 마음이 강퍅한 남녀들이 많은 이유는, 참된 애정을 연약으로 간주하여 막고 억눌러 왔기 때문이다. 이런 사람들의 더 좋은 본성은 어린 시절에 짓눌려 없어졌다. 하나님의 사랑의 빛이 그들의 냉혹한 이기심을 녹여버리지 않는 한 그들의 행복은 영원히 파괴될 것이다. 우리의 아이들이 예수님의 부드러운 정신과 천사들이 우리에게 나타내는 동정심을 갖게 되기를 바란다면, 우리는 어린 시절의 관대하고 사랑스러운 감정을 북돋아 주어야 한다.

천연계 가운데서 그리스도를 보도록 아이들을 가르치라. 그들을 집 밖의 장대한 나무 아래나 정원으로 데리고 나가라. 경이로운 모든 창조물들 가운데서 그분의 사랑의 표현을 보도록 가르치라. 그분께서 모든 생물을 주관하는 법칙을 만드셨고 또 우리를 위한 율법을 만드셨으며, 이 율법들은 우리의 행복과 기쁨을 위한 것임을 그들에게 가르치라. 긴 기도와 지루한 권고로 그들을 지치게 하지 말고 자연의 실물 교훈을 통하여 하나님의 율법에 대한 순종을 가르치라. – 시대의 소망, 516-7.

 

Teach The Children To See Christ In Nature

 

Parents, in the training of your children, study the lessons that God has given in nature. If you would train a pink, or rose, or lily, how would you do it? Ask the gardener by what process he makes every branch and leaf to flourish so beautifully, and to develop in symmetry and loveliness. He will tell you that it was by no rude touch, no violent effort; for this would only break the delicate stems. It was by little attentions, often repeated. He moistened the soil, and protected the growing plants from the fierce blasts and from the scorching sun, and God caused them to flourish and to blossom into loveliness. In dealing with your children, follow the method of the gardener. By gentle touches, by loving ministrations, seek to fashion their characters after the pattern of the character of Christ.

Encourage the ｅxpression of love toward God and toward one another. The reason why there are so many hardhearted men and women in the world is that true affection has been regarded as weakness, and has been discouraged and repressed. The better nature of these persons was stifled in childhood; and unless the light of divine love shall melt away their cold selfishness, their happiness will be forever ruined. If we wish our children to possess the tender spirit of Jesus, and the sympathy that angels manifest for us, we must encourage the generous, loving impulses of childhood.

Teach the children to see Christ in nature. Take them out into the open air, under the noble trees, into the garden; and in all the wonderful works of creation teach them to see an ｅxpression of His love. Teach them that He made the laws which govern all living things, that He has made laws for us, and that these laws are for our happiness and joy. Do not weary them with long prayers and tedious exhortations, but through nature's object lessons teach them obedience to the law of God. – Desires of Ages, 516-7.
