CHARACTER OR REPUTATION

You have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. -Revelation 3:1

Legendary basketball coach John Wooden (1910~2010) believed that character is far more important than reputation. “Your reputation is what you’re perceived to be by others,” Coach Wooden often told his players, “but your character is what you really are. You’re the only one that knows your character. You can fool others, but you can’t fool yourself.” In the book of Revelation, we fi-nd the words of the risen Christ to seven churches in Asia. To the church in Sardis, Jesus said, “I know your works, that you have a name [reputation] that you are alive, but you are dead” (Rev. 3:1). The Lord knew the truth about them, and no doubt deep down they knew it too. Jesus told them to wake up and strengthen the spiritual life inside them that was about to die (v.2). He urged them to remember the truth they had received, obey it, then turn around and start moving in a new direction (v.3). When the Lord shows us what’s wrong in our lives, He always provides a remedy for change. When we turn from our sins, He forgives and strengthens us to start over. How liberating to exchange a false spiritual reputation for the true, life-giving character that comes from knowing Christ our Lord! -David McCasland

성품인가 명성인가

네가 살았다 하는 이름은 가졌으나 죽은 자로다-요한계시록 3:1

전설적인 농구코치 존 우든(1910-2010)은 성품이 명성보다 훨씬 중요하다고 믿었습니다. 그는 자주 선수들에게 “너희의 명성은 다른 이들에 의해 인식되는 것이지만, 너희의 성품은 진정한 너희들 자신이다. 오직 너 자신만이 너의 성품을 알고 있다. 다른 이들을 속일 수는 있겠지만 너 자신을 속일 수는 없다.”라고 말했습니다. 요한계시록에서 우리는 부활하신 그리스도께서 아시아에 있는 일곱 교회에게 하시는 말씀을 봅니다. 사데교회를 향하여 예수님은 “내가 네 행위를 아노니 네가 살았다 하는 이름은 가졌으나 죽은 자로다”(계 3:1)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 주님은 그들에 대한 진실을 알고 계셨고, 그들 또한 내심 그것을 잘 알고 있었음이 분명합니다. 예수님은 그들에게 깨어나 죽어가는 그들 안의 영적인 삶을 굳게 하라고 말씀하셨습니다(2절). 예수님은 그들이 받은 진리를 기억하고 순종한 다음, 돌이켜 새로운 방향으로 나아가라고 강력히 권고하셨습니다(3절). 주님이 우리의 삶에 무엇이 잘못되었는지를 알려주실 때에는 어떻게 바꿔야 하는지 해결책도 항상 제시해주십니다. 그리고 우리가 죄에서 돌아서면 주님은 우리를 용서하시고 다시 시작할 수 있도록 우리를 강하게 해주십니다. 거짓된 영적 명성을 우리 주 그리스도를 앎으로써 생기는 참된 생명의 성품으로 바꾸게 된다면 얼마나 자유로워질까요?

사람들은 참된 명성에 대한 이야기는 접어둔 채 황금과 명예에 대해 너무 많은 말을 한다네 이 세상에 반짝이는 어떤 보석들보다 참된 명성이 비할 데 없이 좋은 것이거늘

성품에 대한 진정한 평가는 아무도 없을 때 우리가 무엇을 하는가에 있다.
