TRUE LOVE

Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. -John 15:13

During the rehearsal for my brother’s wedding ceremony, my husband snapped a picture of the bride and groom as they faced each other in front of the pastor. When we looked at the photograph later, we noticed that the camera’s flash had illuminated a metal cross in the background, which appeared as a glowing image above the couple. The photograph reminded me that marriage is a picture of Christ’s love for the church as shown on the cross. When the Bible instructs husbands to love their wives (Eph. 5:25), God compares that kind of faithful, selfless affection to Christ’s love for His followers. Because Christ sacrificed His life for the sake of love, we are all to love each other (1 John 4:10-11). He died in our place, so that our sin would not keep us separate from God for eternity. He lived out His words to the disciples: “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends” (John 15:13). Many of us suffer from the pain of abandonment, rejection, and betrayal. Despite all of this, through Christ we can understand the sacrificial, compassionate, and enduring nature of true love. 사람이 친구를 위하여 자기 목숨을 버리면 이보다 더 큰 사랑이 없나니-요한복음 15:13

남동생이 결혼식 예행연습을 하는 동안 남편은 신랑신부가 주례목사 앞에서 서로 마주보고 있는 순간을 스냅사진으로 찍었습니다. 나중에 그 사진을 보니 카메라의 플래시가 뒤쪽에 있는 금속 십자가의 빛을 반사시켜 두 사람 위에서 환하게 빛나는 형상으로 나타났습니다. 그 사진은 결혼이란 그리스도께서 십자가에서 보여주신 교회를 향한 사랑을 묘사하고 있다는 것을 나에게 상기시켜 주었습니다. 성경에서 남편들에게 아내를 사랑하라고 가르칠 때(엡 5:25) 하나님은 그 신실하고 이타적인 사랑을 그리스도가 그를 따르는 이들을 사랑하는 것과 비교해 말씀하십니다. 그리스도께서 사랑을 나타내시려 자신의 생명을 희생하셨기에, 우리도 모두 서로 사랑하는 것이 마땅합니다(요일 4:10-11). 주님이 우리 대신 돌아가셨기 때문에 우리의 죄가 우리를 하나님으로부터 영원토록 떼어놓지 못하게 되었습니다. 주님은 “사람이 친구를 위하여 자기 목숨을 버리면 이보다 더 큰 사랑이 없나니”(요 15:13)라는 말씀을 자신의 삶에서 실천하여 제자들에게 보여주셨습니다. 많은 사람들이 버림받고 거부당하고 배신당함으로써 고통을 받습니다. 이런 모든 고통에도 불구하고 우리는 그리스도를 통해 희생하며 자비롭고 오래 참는 참된 사랑의 본질을 배울 수 있습니다. 오늘 하나님이 당신을 사랑하고 있다는 것을 기억하십시오. 예수님이 자신의 생명을 내어주심으로 그것을 증명하셨습니다.

거룩한 사랑, 위대하고 놀라워라! 깊고 전능하며 순수하고 숭고하다네 예수님의 마음에서 나오니 아무리 시간이 흘러도 변함없구나

예수님의 십자가보다 하나님의 사랑을 더 분명하게 말해주는 것은 없다.
