HEARD BY GOD

Hannah spoke in her heart; . . . her voice was not heard. -1 Samuel 1:13

After reading several children’s books with my daughter, I told her that I was going to read a grownup book for a while and then we would look at books together again. I opened the cover and began to read in silence. A few minutes later, she looked at me doubtfully and said, “Mommy, you aren’t really reading.” She assumed that since I wasn’t speaking, I wasn’t processing the words. Like reading, prayer can be silent. Hannah, who longed for a child of her own, visited the temple and “spoke in her heart” as she prayed. Her lips were moving, but “her voice was not heard” (1 Sam. 1:13). Eli the priest saw but misunderstood what was happening. She explained, “I . . . have poured out my soul before the Lord” (v.15). God heard Hannah’s silent prayer request and gave her a son (v.20). Since God searches our hearts and minds (Jer. 17:10), He sees and hears every prayer-even the ones that never escape our lips. His all-knowing nature makes it possible for us to pray with full confidence that He will hear and answer (Matt. 6:8,32). Because of this, we can continually praise God, ask Him for help, and thank Him for blessings-even when no one else can hear us. -Jennifer Benson Schuldt

한나가 속으로 말하매…음성은 들리지 아니하므로-사무엘상 1:13

딸아이와 함께 동화책 몇 권을 읽고 나서, 나는 어른들 책을 잠시 읽은 후 다시 책을 같이 읽자고 말했습니다. 나는 책을 열고 조용히 읽기 시작했습니다. 잠시 후, 딸아이는 나를 미심쩍은 눈으로 바라보며 말했습니다. “엄마, 정말 책을 읽고 계셔요.” 내가 소리 내어 읽지 않으니까 책을 읽지 않고 있다고 생각한 모양입니다. 책 읽는 것과 마찬가지로 기도도 침묵으로 할 수 있습니다. 아기를 간절히 원했던 한나는 성전에 가서 혼자 “속으로 말하며” 기도했습니다. 그녀의 입술은 움직였지만 “음성은 들리지 아니하므로”(삼상 1:13) 제사장 엘리가 보고 오해하자, 한나는 “여호와 앞에 내 심정을 통한 것뿐”(15절)이라고 해명하였습니다. 하나님은 한나가 드린 침묵기도를 들으시고 그녀에게 아들을 주셨습니다(20절). 하나님은 우리의 마음과 생각을 감찰하시기 때문에(렘 17:10) 우리의 모든 기도를, 심지어 우리 입술 밖으로 나가지 않은 것까지도 아시고 들으십니다. 모든 것을 아시는 하나님이시기에 우리는 하나님이 우리의 기도를 들으시고 응답해주시리라는 완전한 확신을 가지고 기도할 수 있습니다(마 6:8,32). 그렇기 때문에 우리의 기도를 들을 수 있는 이가 전혀 없다 해도 우리는 하나님을 계속 찬양하고, 하나님께 도움을 구하며, 축복해주시는 하나님께 감사할 수 있습니다.

내 기도하는 그 시간 그 때가 가장 즐겁다 이 세상 근심 걱정에 얽매인 나를 부르사

우리의 마음을 하나님께 쏟아놓으면 하나님은 평강으로 우리의 마음을 채워주신다.
